AuburnIceTigers Shows the clout that programs had with the media before limits on scholarships, and the degree to which a system was more responsible for the numbers than the individual’s talent. In the NFL, Muncie could have had a HOF career if not for drugs. Bell could have been great if not for going to TB. And TD Tony was great, HOF, and at his size, truly impressive what TD accomplished.

I remember this game. The Colts were touted as highly possible Super Bowl contenders, thus opening MNF on two of the first three weeks. Sadly, Bert Jones separated his shoulder in a preseason game against Detroit, so Bill Troup started the season opener on Monday Night at Dallas. The Colts lost 38-0, then lost to Miami 42-0 the next week. They were 0-2 when they faced New England, which was their divisional nemesis, and things were expected to go from worse to worst. That's why Joe Washington's performance was even more breathtaking.
@richd30442 жыл бұрын
1978 was the first year of the Colts decline after three excellent seasons in a row. Jones got injured in the preseason at Detroit when he was sacked by Bubba Baker on the hard Pontiac Silverdome surface. Lydell Mitchell and George Kunz were gone, and the following year saw John Dutton leave the sack pack. They never recovered from the Jones injury, but Joe Washington certainly provided great excitement on this day.

I believe he had a knee injury pretty early in his NFL career. Seems like a combination of his small size and his ability to make really quick cuts and fake the defense out plus the overall brutality of football back then took it's toll. He did win a college national championship with Oklahoma and a NFL Super Bowl championship with the Redskins, so that's pretty cool. This game was definitely the highlight of his NFL career. One of the greatest individual performances I've ever seen. Joe Washington did everything but sell tickets that night. This game was an unexpected bright spot to a season which had started off disastrously. No Bert Jones, no Lydell Mitchell, and no points in the first two games. The Colts had been embarrassed in the opener on Monday night two weeks prior in Dallas, 38-0, then came home the next week and were destroyed by Miami, 42-0. I remember thinking the Colts had little chance in this game as well against the talented Patriots. This was the year when everything started to unravel for the Colts, and began a string of six consecutive losing seasons before they left for Indianapolis. But for one night, at least, Joe Washington gave us Colt fans a glimmer of hope.

@camoss37244 жыл бұрын
@@Pineemonkeys2ndchannel Washington was there for the first two games, but if I remember correctly, he was pretty much limited to returning kicks. I don't know why he didn't receive more playing time, but since the Colts got blown out in each of their first two games by a combined 80-0, whatever effectiveness he may have had as a running back was more or less negated by how quickly both of those games got out of hand.

I too grew up in Oklahoma and was probably Joe Washington's biggest fan, because I wanted to be Joe Washington. I would watch Little Joe at Oklahoma and emulate him to a tee when I played wishbone running back at Marian Anderson Junior High School (Tulsa, Ok). I always felt Joe Washington and myself were the best running backs from '73 -'75. I was given the greatest compliment anyone can give an athlete, when I was told by a former schoolmate 20 years later, "That I was the best running back he'd ever saw and that he'd never seen anybody run the ball like that. That I reminded him of Emmitt Smith". Whom at the time was the NFL leading alltime rusher with the Dallas Cowboy's. Well I was a little upset with the comparison to Emmitt, but couldn't be mad because he had just said "I was the best he'd ever saw". I was taken back a little and thought about all the great running backs who ever played the game: Gale Sayers, Jim Brown, O.J. Simpson, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett, Archie Griffin, Anthony Davis, Billy Simms, Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson, Marcus Dupree, Eric Dickerson, Thurmond Thomas, Emmit Smith, etc. Wow, he had just given me the ultimate compliment. By the way, I met Barry Sanders at the Super Bowl in '07 Giants vs. Patriots and felt compelled to tell him this story after he asked me If I had played football. To me it felt like one great athlete talking to another and Barry took it all in stride, his expression never changed and didn't make a comment either.

Yep. That night was a historical night for sure! Lots of guys had great careers with lots of consistent good games, but not many had a NCAA national champ, Super Bowl national champ AND a lifetime game like Little Joe!!!

was at this game. The 4th qtr. rain was intense. What a night for Joe Washington! At halftime they had the Foxboro crowd sing 'Happy Birthday' to Darryl Stingley! He had been paralyzed by a nasty Jack Tatum back hit in a freaking exhibition game only a month before. Of course he never played again!

Wow! Thanks for sharing! I'm sure this was a lifelong memory of something that may never happen again...

I remember this game! I was a big Baltimore Colts fan from the days when my mom would tell me stories about -Johnny U - Johnny Unitas lol Joe Washington was incredible look at the way he goes up the middle getting slammed but then popping right up pep in his step run catch throw return BLOCK he was ALWAYS like that😇 I turned into a Redskins fan in the 1980’s under Joe Gibbs first ballot HOF and then (genius) Bobby Beathard traded a 2nd round pick in 81 for Joe and was a major part of the back to back redskins super bowl teams 82 & 83 along w Big John Riggins RIGGO Hell of a man from Oklahoma I believe. Joe was a true gentleman

This was one MNF game I can recall vividly…I was 9 y/o…Mr. Washington was awesome…fans wearing President Nixon masks…a guy in a gorilla suit…the pouring rain…Mr. Washington throws a long halfback option pass for a TD…Dandy Don singing “A raining night in Boston town” Chet Forte must’ve been having a meltdown in the production booth with the horrible lighting and glare from that artificial turf field

Earl Campbell as well.

That’s because defenses couldn’t get close enough to Greg Pruitt or Joe Washington except to grab a handful of tear away jersey and couldn’t bring down Earl Campbell. Back then the jerseys were looser unlike today’s skin tight unis. I liked the tear aways, it made the defense actually have to tackle.

Yes, but they could not ban Sooner running backs!! BOOMER!😎

The modern New England Patriots fan looks at this video and asks themselves: "What's wrong with the Gillette Stadium field?" Or, "Where's Bill Belichick and his hoodie?" Lol...

First player in NFL history to throw for a touchdown, catch a touchdown and run a kickoff back for a touchdown all in the same game.

I watched this Monday Night Football game back in '78, and I couldn't believe that the Patriots lost. They were on their way to a division title, and they allowed Joe Washington to beat them by himself. As Chuck would say, "turrrr-i-bal!'

I saw this game as it turned to rain and to cap his 3 TD performance Joe Washington had a 90 yard KO return for a TD.

The Baltimore Colts used Joe Washington so much, they had to draft a RB in the first round in 1980, Curtis Dickey. He had great speed, but wasn't a good RB.

I came to watch this because on antiques roadshow on PBS there was a man who was the baltimore colts ball boy during this game and he was apraising one of the jerseys that washington wore, as you can see there are small holes in the jersey, he had this boy who was 16 cut holes in 4 of his jerseys with scissors because he thought it would make the jersey tear away when being tackled with the tear away jerseys, now banned. The jersey is all ripped up and they valued it at $6-8 thousand dollars. Washington didn't give him the jersey, they just said take it, after all it's full of holes so he took it an hung it on his wall in his bedroom. Now this guy is 60 and has a $6,000 ripped up jersey.

I also came here after watching that. Really cool and novel piece of sports history.
