Did you guys know that the nervous system is divided into two sections? It's divided into the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal chord. The brain has 12 cranial nerves and the spinal chord has 31 spinal nerves: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal nerve. Now, the peripheral nervous system consists of every other nerve in the body (outside of the brain and spinal chord). It is divided into two parts and those two parts are the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system mostly deals with skeletal muscle contraction and the autonomic nervous system mostly deals with involuntary action (i.e. the heart).

If, say, they had 100 people in the crowd getting paid $500, that'd be $50000. That's a big budget for a laugh track. Good thing people actually like Conan, and want to see it live! You can apply to go to see the show for free online. The crowd are definitely told to laugh a lot, and are told when to laugh/applaud etc, but there's not reason to pay them :)
