Finally, someone who talks about how each program applies a different formula to the raw images!!! :) I have tried several programs, and the only one that doesn't really change my raw photo, and I can see that the jpg is really similar, is a very unknown prg, Silkypix, quite slow, but also a good way to make all my files into tiff and from them edit where ever I want! Thank you and best regards from Uruguay.

Great video, want a bit more fun, put in a 1GB card and shoot that, gives you the feeling of having a 36 roll of film. You could go 1 step further and label them up as a film recipe, so 1 card shoot Acros, and to shoot Classic Neg you need to put in another 1 GB card, just like analogue.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea. To go one more step forward: Is it somehow possible to save each film recipe to each SD card, so when you put the SD card into the camera it automatically uses that film recipe?

Hold up FujiFlim does have a plug-in for Lightroom of it’s film simulation but it will only work on shoots taken by Fuji film camera. I use it all the time. It’s better if you do it directly on the camera to avoid post editing. I use the custom simulation from fujiflim weekly he’s awesome. I shoot both raw and simulation many times I share the jpegs because it looks so good.

Another great video, Joe! I appreciate your agnosticism when it comes to camera brands, but as a Fuji shooter I’m definitely enjoying the videos of late on the fun of the Fujifilm shooting experience. And I’m inspired to go out shooting locally more. I usually travel for photography, so the last year has been difficult. I just need my summer temperatures to come down below their current 117°F. Your profiles work so much better for your subject than the fuji x weekly. I find that they are too US centric. If you're not shooting a dusty, abandoned gas station, basket ball hoop, motel sign in the desert then fuji x weekly just makes everything look like a muddy Matrix colour grade. The best one they have for outside of that environment is the Ektar recipe, even if it's a little extreme in the white balance shift.
@joeallam
@joeallam 3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that, thanks. I’ve not browsed too much through Fuji X Weekly. From what I’ve seen, it seems more towards replicating existing film stock, whereas I’d prefer to just tweak it to my own custom needs than try and replicate something. I’m intrigued to see Ektar though - cheers!

I couldn't agree more with you ! I've tried many of them and the only one I kept was ektar. Other simulations I use now is custom I've made or some of them founded elsewhere and tweaked

Agree with Grey and ditto above comment by Michael. Ektar is the only one I found useful. The remaining custom recipes are my own. Not that Fuji X weekly recipes are bad in anyway. His recipes just suit that environment. If I'm in that kind of environment, his recipes are perfect.

Jeez, I’ve owned multiple Fujifilm cameras (switched from X-T4 back to Sony, had an X100V stolen, and now got an X-T30 II) and I’ve always wondered the same… you perfectly verbalized what’s been in my head for so long. Even more intriguing is the fact that just today I also tested the Ektar recipe and found it to be great. Richie does great work but this is the reality for people not living in that area.

Very nice video! I’d like to add two more points to you: - As X RAW Studio uses the CPU from the camera, the requirements on the PC/Mac are quite low. Ideal if you want to run it on a slower machine during vacation, for example. - It can’t be used with older cameras than X-T2/ X-Pro2. For me that’s one major flaw to the X-T1, but at least I have Capture One.
@joeallam
@joeallam 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers! Good to know about the X-T1 (which is a shame). I did mention about the cpu in my filming, but cut it from the final video as I realised, for my use at least, I’d probably actually benefit more from speed if I had my Mac’s processor doing the work haha! I appreciate for those with older computers it would be a bonus though.

Really enjoying your videos. I have just swapped my old Nikon for an X-T4 (your previous couple of videos were the final convincing I needed to take the plunge and buy it) as constant editing in post had really depleated my motivation to go out and about with my camera. Ahh dang, that’s a massive shame. I think the key component is that the software uses the camera’s processor to process the image, rather than the computer’s. Perhaps the USB port isn’t fast enough to support the file transfer back and forth between computer and camera 😔

The biggest issue I have is some of the mono recipes ask for high ISO. No coming back from a high ISO in RAW, so whilst its nice to have a safety net of RAW there is a certain point that it doesn't work. Even exposure choice/settings at the time of the shot, for some of the more extreme FFSR (FujiFilmSimRecipes), your commitment to getting 'that vibe' right there and then can work really well for the Jpg but the RAW.. hmm... you'd prolly never shoot that moment at those settings if wanting proper post production dynamic room (such as deliberately blowing highlights or crushing darks to suit the FFSR). At the moment I am needing to really knuckle down and decide what aspects of FFSR I keep and which I ditch, because at the moment I am even feeling that with the really good SooC shots I can still enhance them better just from very mild slider adjustments in LR. Adding to the fact I have RNI5 so can apply a more realistic grain and analogue effect, I am starting to think of the FFSR as starting points rather than completely finished images. Argh..! but then that kinda defeats the point lol. Round and round we go the merry-go-round of editing!

Really nice video! My wish for Fujifilm: to be able to replace the built-in simulations (like the ones I will never use) with custom ones *without* using up a custom position. (The X-S10, for instance, only has 4 custom positions.) This way we could use our custom recipes the same way we use the built-in ones, whenever we want.

Useful content, capably presented without distracting hype, amiable host👍. (Nice birthday pizza, also.😁) We need a simple way to bring recipes directly into LR as camera profiles, IMO. Read about and tried Fuji Luts to PS to LR “user custom profile” - enables the Fuji “look” to other cam raw files, but w/mixed results. Do you (or your viewers) know of any simpler process that does not involve w/luts? “Profile” in X-Raw Studio not the same as “Profile” in LR. Cheers!

Glad you enjoyed it; cheers! Unfortunately I don’t know of any “one size fits all” approach to transferring the in-camera processing over to software. In terms of film simulation profiles, Capture One is a little more accurate than Lightroom, but I’d say it also comes as a cost of less organisation tools than what Lightroom offers. It definitely feels like we’re in a weird transition period with Lightroom at the moment and have been for about 4 years now…

I essentially want to emulate my own style so I can shoot JPEG and reduce time editing. If I shoot raw and export the raw with Lightroom edits, would Fuji X studio pick up all of the adjustments made in order to convert into a custom film sim. I enjoyed watching your explanation of recipes and how to handle in X Raw Studio. It is a pity recipes cannot be exchanged as little files. Would make exchanging or installing them on Fuji camera's or X Raw Studio much more easier.
@bibhasdas7801
@bibhasdas7801 2 жыл бұрын
Filip, Yes you can actually exchange the recipes. For example all recipes in my computer are stored in C:\Users\\AppData\Local\com.fujifilm.denji\X_RAW_STUDIO\X-S10 folder with a .FP1 extension. These are basically xml files. So what I do I create one style and then copy that to a new file, open in text editor, change all the parameters I need and save it again. You can definitely send another person these files and if they copy it to this same folder, the X Raw Studio will see it as new user preset. Only catch being, the first few lines of your xml file is going to be specific to your camera. So you just have to replace it with yours, that's it. No issue, just generate a random style from your own setup, copy the first few lines from there and replace it in the file you received from another person.

The recipe (or indeed any of the base Fujifilm film simulations) is only applied to the jpeg. The original RAW file remains unaltered. You can use the same unaltered RAW file over and over again to produce as many different recipe/simulation jpeg images as you like.

Hi Joe .. great video. I'm trying to create a custom recipe for my x100v, but it won't allow me to adjust Dynamic Range, or the D Range Priority from the raw file. Am I missing something obvious ? Appreciate your input. Thanks

Same issue here and I found the answer in these comments. If you create a recipe within the software you must ensure your original raw file was shot using the identical dynamic range to the recipe you're following.

Note, using clarity in a custom film simulation can slow its processing.

You crop the jpeg not the RAF.

Great video. Welcome to the world of JPEG only, it really is quite liberating. Unfortunately, FX Studio doesn't work with the X-Pro1 or X-T1. Which is frustrating, as they're my cameras ;)

So do I take the photos in raw or jpeg to use this app?

You can only change the processing values by using raw files. JPEGs are viewable, but not editable.
