I envy you Zach, getting to spend time with your grandpa. I lost mine in 1982. And I lost my grandma in 1980. I still miss both of them, all these years later. Treasure them and all the time you get to spend with your family.

I was thinking the same thing myself. Mine passed before I was five years old. I can't remember his voice, or his laugh. But I can remember him sitting by my bed telling me stories. I can remember sitting in his lap as he drove, or how he'd hoist me on the roof of the car to watch the long freight trains go by. My grandmother passed when I was a teenager and I remember her vividly. She was a real character. She had a self described screw loose and the times I spent with her were some of the happiest of my life. Much love.

As a Grandpa I know how special it is to be able to make 1 more year in the woods with the Grandkids. My is off to you Zack and to you Sarah for spending good quality time with your Grandpa. I guarantee he will treasure that weekend and know you and Sarah will treasure the time well spent with him. He is soooo fortunate to have Grandkids that are willing to do this with him. And Zack you brought a tear to my eyes when you said “it just wouldn’t feel like duck weekend without Grandpa”. Way to go young kiddos!!!

I had wonderful Grandparents growing up but they weren't involved in anything I enjoyed doing. So I don't have memories of doing much together. I'm now 64 with a 1 year old grandson and I'm bound and determined to be involved in the things he'll enjoy. I love to camp, hunt, fish, BBQ, and do Cowboy Style Cooking. I hope if health allows to be able to share this stuff with him.

Zach, when you said it out loud that when your grandpa leaves.... it's not the same... WOW that hit me hard because my grandpa left forever a few years back. You're right it's not the same, but it's up to us to keep it going! Your dad (love you Joe) is grandpa now. One day you'll be grandpa.... you gotta make it just as special for them as it was for you.

Idea time Zach🤔 🔨build yourself a small light weight 3 sided dog house style box for the generator Something easy to assemble and disassemble over and over again Use thin plywood and the 2 inch blue foam board for sound proofing Snug fit but it has to be able to breathe , use the open side for the exhaust then point that side away from camp You won’t need to put it so far away 🍻

I didn't notice a portable privy in your camp. We made one out of a 4'X5' wood frame to sit over a dug hole. We made a 3/4 " painted plywood seat with a chamfered hole cut into it. We stapled felt paper inside the seat into a funnel into the hole so no cleanup was required. Just bury the felt paper in the hole. We used clear plastic for a roof supported by three pieces of lathe and black plastic stapled around at the top and front and a separate piece for a door. We pounded in stakes on two sides to secure it. We used long machine and carriage bolts thru drilled holes to assemble. We numbered and labeled the pieces to make yearly assembly easier. It sure beat squatting in the woods in the rain and snow and cold. You could add a heater but we just didn't linger. A large empty coffee can kept critters from stealing the TP and a small bucket of hydrated lime kept odors to a minimum. LED lanterns were a nice touch for night trips. The frame would fit nicely in the bottom of a trailer. We used mostly 2x4s with a couple 2X6s and 2X8s. We mostly used scraps. It had to be sturdy because of wind and snow load but I think it could be designed to weigh less at least above the seat area. The frame could be preassembled at home if you had room on a trailer. I didn't check the internet for plans but they may exist.

You said something, Zach, that I felt and have known deeply. When you're grandpa leaves, whether it's for the time being or altogether. We never forget and feel their loss. I lost one of mine when I was only four, but I still remember so much of him, of when he lived. I know it sounds strange to many that I remember back that far, but I still have sharp memories of when I was a baby in the crib on the family farm and so many more. Treasure every moment, mate. You're so lucky that he's still with you. On a higher note. It was great that you got some ducks. I had an old mate, that I worked with, he'd bring me some smoked wild duck he'd shot and smoked himself, as well as marinated deer... such wonderful tastes, that I'll never taste again... probably. Old-mate is long gone now and me, too in-firmed to even attempt. Thanks for the video and keeping me wishing to be well enough to get out in the bush again.

Zach, build a wooden box to put over your generator. Put a thick layer of insulation inside, drill holes for airflow & you'll never hear it running. Nascar fans do this for courtesy because they have to camp side by side.

I miss duck hunting from the 60's and 70's. I started hunting puddle ducks in the marsh near my home. After the Army I hunted diving ducks Christmas week in a harbor on Lake Ontario. Tough hunting from predawn to darkness. We would break ice to get across the harbor to a breakwall. Waves would come over the breakwall and immediately freeze on your gun and clothing.
