So what does everybody else listen to, country western...? I give New York props when it comes to serious emceeing, some of the best have come outta New York....some....and I’ll also give New York credit for birthing hip hop, but what else are we really talking about....a 30 year old white man invented basketball back in the 19th Century, but that sure doesn’t mean he (or white guys) was the best at it....things change and evolve, and so must some of y’all with this idea that hip hop lives and dies at the New York state line.

Bobby Seale Junior to say mase is not top 5 bad boy proves our point . Did u ever hear of children of the corn ? Did u ever hear of big L ? U ever stay up 1 am to 5 am on a school nite to hear a dope freestyle from stretch and bobito again most of this stuff only a New Yorker can answer not some one from South Carolina no disrespect

haiti don I hear u....Im from Texas....i downloaded a lot of big L back in the day...don’t get me wrong, he was already dead by then, but Ive always enjoyed New York rap....Mos Def, GangStarr, Buckshot and Duck Down, Heltah Skeltah, Smif and Wessun, Brand Nubian, Wu Tang, Nas, the Bad Boy era, Camp Low, Lost Boys, Keith Murray, Epmd....this was my era, while I was still jammin OutKast, Ball & G, UGK (home town heroes) Scarface, Snoop and Dre, Bone and Screwed up Click, Cube, Too Short, etc...this was before Rockafella, Ruff Ryders and all that shit we REALLY jammed....me and my friends loved Harlem World....that was our shit...now I didn’t LIVE in New York so of course we didn’t get your radio stations and all that, I agree, but we still were fans of the culture, and quality will find fans in far away places....

Mase, Ja Rule etc. all have albums that are perfect examples of music you like when you're young. Kendrick, 2Pac & OutKast are hip-hop examples that have mature and classic albums. A 50 yr old can listen to Aquemini or GKMC and still be impressed by the lyrics and storytelling. + the overall message is incredible.

Jus because an album didn't age well, it doesn't mean that it's not a classic. Straight Outta Compton didn't age well either, but it's still classic.
@MrVIP1993
@MrVIP1993 6 жыл бұрын
Aboood165 I'm aware of the impact of Straight Outta Compton, that's why I brought it up but it doesn't change the fact that it didn't age well and the songs don't really sound good when you listen to it now, so that's not a reason to not call something a classic. Mase's Harlem World album may not have changed the rap game per se but it still had an impact, certainly in NY, and Mase birthed MCs with his style. Also Mase was a huge part of that Bad Boy movement post Biggie. Charlemagne sounds really silly trying to discredit Mase.

Straight outta Compton did age well no READY TO DIE DIDNT AGE WELL AT ALL. You can tell it was made from the 90s Straight Outta Compton you can make it stretch to early 2000s mid 2000s but that's because of today's technology and how bests are just structured differently

Can't argue with most of Charlamagne point tho. The Harlem world album got corny over time. If you going of nostalgia then it's still a great album, but otherwise it's gotten corny. Just like you not going to listen to Curtis blow or Beastie boys like that cuz over time the albums is corny once you grow up. The artist was still a great artist but their old stuff just don't have grown up 40+ yr old staying power.

This comes down to two things. Mase must've smashed a chick Charlamagne liked and now hes knee deep in his feels and that's why he's hating hard AF! Or.. maybe at the height of the badboy era, Charlamagne was a super fan and approached Mase for a pic and an autograph and Mase curved him and now hes carried that anger all these years lol

KontryBoy706 listening to the call Charlamagne had a great point. Mase' abum in 2017 is borderline wack and a bit corny. Unless you listening to it nostalgicly reliving that era via the songs. In the time it came out shit was great and classic. But it aged like hot raw chicken. And if you separate the lox into individuals Mase is outside the top 5 badboy artists. If you leave the LOX as one group then Mase in in the top 5 bad boy artists. Simple. Imo

Classic albums stand the test of time... Rakims follow the leader still dope paid in full nas illmatic jayz reasonable doubt ugk riding dirty etc they were hot then hot 15 20 years later thats classic... Harlem World was not classic... Cant confuse sales or popularity with being classic either else we end up saying bow wow and souldja boy are legendary emcees really

I think that depends on region. And age. Maybe in Harlem and New York it's classic. Are there many rap albums from Harlem before Mase? I don't know if there are. Even if you were to collect top albums of each label and era it would have to be like the 2nd or 3rd Bad Boy album you'd buy. Depends on if Life After Death came out before Harlem World. I can't remember. And Bow Wow could be a legend to kids who grew up listening to him. He had a 12 year run. That takes a kid from teens to adult. . In their eyes, he could be a legend. We were just too old to listen to them. Music is funny in how much it's a matter of perspective.

I think this brings up a bigger conversation. What is the criteria for a classic album? This should be a subject on a future podcast. I hear Illmatic, Doggystyle, Midnight Marauders, Life After Death, The Chronic 2001 today and they still sounds fresh to me. To me those are records I feel withstand the hands of time. I also feel Good Kid MAAD City and To Pimp A Butterfly are well on their way to classic status. None the less what makes a classic album outside of withstanding the hands of time? One thing I have noticed all classic albums have in common is the lack of "trendy shit". But What else?
