Independence is owning your masters and publishing. Having then a placement from Apple or Spotify is a business practice. Doesn't make you less independent. Chance is right
@Kidd0Wycked6 жыл бұрын
Joe just on some BS. Independent has a different context in the music business. And he knows that. Chance isn't fooling ppl. You gotta have a team of ppl to help you get stuff out. And you gotta make business moves that work in your favor. You can't do this stuff by yourself. But that does mean you have to relinquish ownership to do so? I honestly don't get why Joe is being a nitpick. But Chance is absolutely a dude I would to have a conversation with. Dude ask mad questions, and doesn't shy away from explanations. Respect to him for that.

@Drowzy Meta Basically this, dude comes from a rich politically involved family. Its easy for him to say hes independent when he was practically born into a machine already. Just like Kylie Jenner or Kendall...one of them bitches that said they were self made. Its nonsense and almost an insult to compare that to a regular artist that really grew up in the struggle with no resources. Not that its impossible but he speaks so candidly like its so easy to accomplish what he has..

I've never seen Budden look so weak AND bitter in his entire career, more than this interview. Chances definition of independent is the EXACT same definition that everybody who wants to be independent is wanting to be. Just because you're independent, doesn't mean you can't do basic business. This man is outside his mind. The single most important thing about being independent is OWNING and CONTROLLING your own masters...that's where ALL of the money is made. Everything else is trickled down to the people who work for you after that. Unlike most artists, where the LABEL owns the master and trickles the money down to the artist...that shit is over with. Joe, stop.

I know what Joe means about independence and standing completely alone but that’s not realistic. Independence is owing everything that’s you. Levering yourself in deals and partnerships to spread your music and get paid is a power move as an Independent
@VerseOnez6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, cuz those moves mean you sell the rights to your shit when you make those moves so naming it a "power move" is subjective. Its hit or miss. So selling your shit doesn't usually end up going good as a power move. Joe just tells people what hes been thru and his experience thru fucked up deals, and this is him spreading his wisdom, but it's not necessarily the same situation that he went thru so he doesn't understand how people can actually be successful while getting fucked in the process. It's losses and gains brotha.
@themanplan9876 жыл бұрын
I think when people think independent it's doing it alone. Independent woman is doing it alone without needing a man. So apple buying his album and giving him money, He's not independently selling to his audience. But I'm sure whatever he sold his album for her probably could have done those numbers I'm assuming. But wont know till his next album. I think he said he sold to apple for like 500k, which is like 50k albums obviously before costs taken out. I'm sure chance can do 50k or more so I don't think he is dependent on apple. But is using/used them
@CloudWalker__6 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right. Just because you make moves and business with other companies, doesn’t make you a dependent artist.
@LowercaseKev6 жыл бұрын
Well the thing Joe is saying is when you give a company exclusives to your music, you no longer are independent as far as being able to put your music everywhere for profit. It's a handcuff of what your album can sell for the limit of the exclusive deal you setup. It's basically a 2 week short term deal you made. Now if you just do your own marketing and upload your music thru the various distribution softwares solely you don't get the short term money of $500,000. So in that way Chance wasn't independent on coloring book because of him doing an exclusive deal. Sure it helped for numbers on the one streaming service but it hurt his numbers overall as a result, and handcuffed him to the one steamer for those 2 weeks. So yes Chance owns all his own shit(minus paying the royalties to the producers, engineers, etc) but Chance taking the $500K deal was him selling rights to stream his album only on one distribution app. So it's not fully independent because Spotify or Apple helps boost the numbers by exposing the album even more than he would have been able to son his own. Much like a label signed artist has done for them. It's not a bad thing though
@LowercaseKev6 жыл бұрын
@Erica Deramushe did sell his rights, his streaming distribution rights....to one service for 2 weeks. So not only do they broadcast his album more, they got him free Superbowl ads on them. It's not a bad thing but he did sign a deal for two weeks so it wasn't independent based on Chance's own definition of Independent Artist

I don't completely understand why Jo was trying to tell Chance that he wasn't independent. But i guess he was saying that Chance is not independent because of the help he receives. Real industry people know what Chance talkin about its just viewed different because he has a high level of fame being an artist (Organically) plus bruh music is really different then what alot of people emulating esppecally message wise. bruh had all the juice and still made sure he's crew ate, even if it jerpodsied his money. thats loyality/integrety thats a different element along with not being on no rachet sht i would imaging u wouldnt have as hard of a time talking to a business representative/owner about partnering for a project. especially if you bringing value. L J how is he distributing threw a major company like tune core, while still owning “ALL” of his percentage?
@lj86474 жыл бұрын
ShaqTalksStocks tunecore isn’t a major. There are 3 majors. Warner, Sony, and Universal. Neither of them house Tune Core. Tunecore is A distribution service that simply takes upfront money in exchange for being a direct link between the artist and the Streaming services and stores. This doesn’t intervene, nor does it affect your master. On top of that, Artists don’t contract to Tune Core. I can easily remove my album from TuneCore to distro kid without any Issue.
@lj86474 жыл бұрын
ShaqTalksStocks percentage doesn’t equal master either. Even if Tune core took even 1% (which they don’t), that doesn’t give them any ownership over the master recording.. it’s simply a distribution cut. Artists usually split parts of a record (percentages) with a producer. That doesn’t give the producer ownership to the master recording.

In other words, independence in music industry (as Joe says AND HOW IT IS IN THIS INDUSTRY) is to own every parts of your business; mastering, publishing and distribution. But nowadays, there's no more real opportunities or even reasons to be independent (owning distribution) since physical copies are dead. Like Chance said (and Joe agreed to), not owning distribution doesn't make you not independent, it's selling your rights to your mastering and especially publishing that will make that. Great discussion, I personally want more of this stuff.

He may be independent, but he got connects. Hella fucking connects, thats what Joe trying to say. But i've been known that!
@TheLunarSurface6 жыл бұрын
I can get what Joe Budden is saying. If you have the industry heavily promote you or anything of yours then you’re not independent. You have the industry backing your music. You got help. But he is independent in the creating of the art, not the business practice.
@AdolphSaxOfficial6 жыл бұрын
owning the rights to the music your record makes an independent artists. You can go get distribution for yourself if you have a proven track record for making hits. That's entirely different from signing with a record company and giving them rights to your music in exchange for them getting distribution and promotion for you.

Independent doesn’t mean you can’t make stuff happen and collaborate with bigger platforms.

Joe's got a weird definition for what being independent is. Chances definition is what artists strive for, everything in house and owning your masters and publishing.

I’d rather hear about how he is an industry plant ? He had funding and a privileged upbringing he’s not from the bad parts of Chicago his pop was secretary of labor under Obama so funding and connections came from that direction
@DavidBrown-dh7jf6 жыл бұрын
SENCE I can't argue with a single point, you are correct.
@BrothaWithACamera6 жыл бұрын
No one seems to understand this point. Chance is not some regular dude from the gutter that was trying to get on. I guess people just like the idea of grinding, working hard and being successful in the end but a lot of times thats just not enough in todays world. Everybody and they momma want to be a star and its probably like 1 percent of people that make it. Your connections and where you come from matter.

I couldn’t care less if Chance is independent or not. He’s kicking game to the youth and creators and telling them to keep what they create, not give it up for a few nickels. Remember, you never get what you’re worth, you get what you negotiate. Get your paper Chance - independent or not.

A union is a great idea for established artists. I am unsure if it will be like a Le'Veon Bell situation. Where they stick with what they got where they know their value isn't maximized by being under a label / risk being injured; or unionize / hold out for better and really create opportunities amongst a group. Education is key for a union though bc record labels like the NFL have an endless pool of talent. There are so many talented artists that we will never hear about bc they don't have the resources or luck if getting noticed. As a union what would be the goal? Better contracts for a select group of experienced artists, or trying to change the industry model at large? IDK if and how it can be done.

Shouts out to the person who told me to watch this; Chance clears up a good amount of things but there's still something suspect about him and his come up.
@vicksingh51616 жыл бұрын
yes i agree, i wish that was addressed. it seems that since 10 day and acid rap, there seemed to be a massive increase in his fan base, and i'm not entirely sure how he achieved with that, without any outside influence. especially getting 3 grammys.
