There are no illegal immigration crises as in order to get here in the first place they need to get on a plane or ferry so they need a passport and if on arrival they do not have the right visa they are returned to their country of origin that same day. Asylum seekers are not illegal immigrants as in order to be and/or claim the status of being an asylum seeker they have to first fly into Ireland with a passport and claim asylum at immigration control in the airport, so they entered the country legally and they made their claim to asylum legally.

This is a decent, forward thinking and ambitious housing proposal. I agree that immigration needs to be addressed and these proposals don’t sound too far removed from what needs to be done. And last but not least, to have Sinn Fein in government in both the north and south, should allow for Ireland to get so much closer to unification. This is such an important election.

What a load of horseshit. Right wing neoliberalism has literally turned a whole generation of middle income and working class people into renters. It has aleady hollowed out the middle class ffs. Firstly, a more robust public housing scheme gives people more options for high quality housing overall and forces the private sector to compete for people to purchase from them, which drives down housing costs. Secondly, public housing can be made optional to buy to their residents and in fact modern housing theory encourages that as it builds more cohesive neighbourhoods with deeper social connections. This is especially true when low or middle income earners are living in the same areas since it leads to less ghettoisation which would result in less areas that are riddled with crime or destitution. State built housing is demonstrably more efficient and enriches a population both economically and socially. You end up paying less to some landlord or the banks, your neighbours benefit and the whole baseline is lifted and overall the quality of our living spaces is elevated. anyone with half a brain knows the housing plan won't work in the long run, promising everything but as soon as the tech companies and high earners start leaving and everyone has lost the incentive to work this country will be in tatters. The way to fix housing is by getting rid of all the red tape and relaxing planning laws, it's also the simplest and easiest to implement. The reason house prices are so high is because it's so hard to get planning and when anyone does get planning they sell it for top dollar (because it's hard to get). Simple. These politicians over complicate everything. If you're unemployed and want a free house I can see why you vote for sinn fein, other than that they are a shambles, change their minds every few weeks depending on public sentiment.

Vienna has been voted 'Most Livable City' 10 times in a row. They have an amazing social and public housing program and have been rapidly expanding it for decades, even adding whole new districts at a time. People are given the chance to have an input in the design of their own public housing. The quality and access to amenities is amazing. The costs are kept in check by controlling the private sector and making sure that housing as a human right is kept at its core. The housing crisis is solvable and the solutions are out there already. Any government who hasn't sorted this stuff out is CHOOSING not to do so for the benefit of someone or other.
