The chrome Conquest looks like a 1950’s, or 1960’s , NASA experimental plane. It is awesome.

well, the X-29 was built off an F-5 fighter body. later Test aircraft (like he X-31 that tested thrust vectoring and Herbst maneuvers) had the same base. so a lot of NASA test planes were modified from existing aircraft. in fact, that's why the Conquest's guns are set up like that--the F-5 Tiger's guns were mounted on top in that configuration.

Michael, it is very reassuring and bolstering somehow to see just how excited that vac-metal Conquest X-30 made you... Sometimes it feels like a fool’s errand, being a collector of toys and action figures. Especially as an adult. But, it’s a passion for me. It always brightens my day and makes me happy to get my hands on a much sought-after piece. And, I’m not even talking about vintage collector’s items. Just, in general. And sometimes, it’s good to be reminded of the fact that there’s nothing wrong with following your passions, and that we all share in that feeling of excitement and satisfaction, in doing so.

That chrome Conquest is just plaun awesome! Truly looks like an X plane from the Skunkworks. I never had the original Conquest growing up, but I DID get the Python Conquest, so to me, that looks better as a Cobra jet, though I always loved the flying tiger mouth on the original. Finally, yes, the Skystriker>>>Conquest, but I like them both.

My biggest problem with the Conquest was always the yellow engines and missiles. Just never looked right. That custom Conquest is amazing.

Joefest was a blast! I blew through my money the first five minutes I was there thanks to marauder gun-runners. Before I left I did manage to pick up a G.I. Joe Desert Night Attack Copter that was looking all sad and lonely on the top shelf at this sellers table. Wish I could have met you Michael,there were so many people. Of course there is always next year.

I remember Sky Force being just one of a number of "special" subteams made of recolored vehicles (often with some of the oddest choices). That in itself is deserving of a video. And you are right. Of all the vehicles that would have benefited from Sky Force's vac chrome design, the Conquest was a no brainer.

I no longer collect G.I. Joe. But I had a large collection as a kid that has been lost to time. The Conquest X-30 was like a consolation prize for my collection, because I never had a Skystriker until further down the road. I hated it, but it was the only Joe jet fighter I had. This, however, may be the most awesome Joe custom I've ever seen. It definitely makes me look at the X-30 in a whole new light. Congratulations on such an awesome find, and thanks for sharing.

Except for the W.H.A.L.E. this was the next biggest vehicle I had. I loved it. We where kind of poor so I never lost any accesories and never (never) broke a vehicle (a lot of crotches and thumbs) One time I had a good friend over and he broke one of the main back fins off, he looked horrified, and I was devestated. But I remember even at like 11 or 12 keeping it together and being like "No big deal" because I didn't want him to feel bad.

I never fell for the Conquest either, but daaaamn that is cooooool! Nice pick up! Would have loved to have been there, but have been recovering from a broken back for five months now, and am about to have another operation. Also I live in Portugal so it's a bit of a trip. Hopefully next year!

That chromed Conquest looks amazing. I will give you one important piece of advise that the classic Japanese Robot collectors are sadly all too well aware of. Handle that bitch with archivist gloves! Wipe and clean it carefully after handling. Your skin oils can and will tarnish the chrome. And that is much too perfect a piece to let that happen to.

Aside from the black accents, i was trying to process why this X30 was aesthetically pleasing aside from being shiny. Then it hit me when I saw the US markings; it reminds me of the jets during the 50s and early 60s where jets had little to no paint. Most showed its aluminum finish such as the F86 Sabre or the F104 Starfighter.

That actually began in late '43 and into '44. The USAF ordered the factories to stop painting the planes! No more camouflage! At 8-9 lbs of weight per gallon of paint they were literally able to get another bomb on each large bomber. Plus the bare metal reduced drag and gave them a noticeable speed boost. Up until that point the main purpose for aircraft paint was for camouflage when the plane was on the ground. The Navy didn't adopt that policy as the paint protected the metal airframes from salt water corrosion. Through the 50's and 60's anything they were trying to squeeze a little more speed or performance out of was generally left unpainted. They went back to painting as the expected life of the airframes became longer and they wanted more corrosion protection. Plus with the newer more powerful and efficient engines the weight and drag of the paint become negligible. And they began to develop less radar reflective paints. But this is why the bare metal look mostly started with planes like the P-38, P-40 and B-29.

@@resolute123 By late 43 there was no real reason to camouflage or paint the planes. The allies had established near complete air superiority so the planes were no longer threatened on the ground. and paint made no real difference in visibility in the air. Unless it was painting to attract attention, such as the assembly planes. Generally after '44 if Air Force planes were fully painted, it was for high visibility. Such as the X-1. I'm not sure when the AF switched back to fully painted. Somewhere mid '60's-Vietnam era.
