I have various versions of the shining 4.3 vhs ! & the 4.3 dvd & full screen dvd ! I love all them for various reasons! I have saw it at a cinema 2 times and they were obviously the best !!!! And if you’re a vinyl fan I would highly recommend the shining soundtrack! I have collected 1000’s of soundtracks/ scores and the shining is definitely my favourite!!!

I've seen a lot of older films in 4:3 and never really thought much of it. I guess I was brainwashed by widescreen, but recently they released Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League on HBO Max and it was in 4:3 and I absolutely loved it. Considering The Shining is my third favorite horror film, I'd love to see some sort of re-release in it's original format.

I have both the fullscreen vhs and fullscreen dvd as well as the widescreen dvd of the shining. the widescreen version is more "cinematic" but the 4:3 version is neat. the vhs is interesting cuz it has the original mono soundtrack which was only released on dvd once 20+ years ago. the soundtrack is much more forceful and overpowering in mono (in a good way)

Thank God!!! I thought you were taking the same stance as King himself and were going to tell me to not watch Kubrick's but instead watch the mini series. Whew! Thank God I should have known better I'm sorry 🤣

The movie was composed for 1.85:1 and protected for a 4:3 ratio. Kubricks own storyboards for The Shining state "The frame is exactly 1-1.85, obviously you compose for that". He apparently hated seeing one of his films cropped to fill a 4:3 TV and shot his other films open matte, so instead of losing image area, more would be added. Now that 16:9 TVs are commonplace, there's no reason we shouldn't watch the film in its widescreen aspect ratio which it was composed for and how it was shown theatrically.

I’ve always been more concerned about seeing things as intended, as opposed to caring about “wasting the screen”. I’m constantly switching the aspect ratio on my TV before I watch something

That's the WHOLE DIFFERENCE from the oldskool VHS. Pan and scan Or WIDESCREEN released. Star wars was a HUGE one for stuff cut out from the pan and scan versions

Hey man. I don't think a lot of people understood what you just said and I know that hurts. I crossed that tundra with a friend recently the door's always open and he knows it but it really made me from a bird's eye view look at the Genesis of our friendship and the events that happened within it and I think I might have misunderstood what I thought our friendship was, meaning am I remembering things through how I see friendships that doesn't mean that's how they see friendships and as things devolved I was the only one seeing how things were it was never in return

Yeah, the Shining tv mini-series was pretty alright. Alright, i bought a widescreen version of movies back in the CRtv days, and i often got complaints from people who borrowed my vhses. I’d tried to explain to them about the aspect ratio. But i get it, blank spots on the tv can be jarring, and i also don’t get Pan and Scan. Ugh, the state of it.

Hey Frantz, I recall watching a vhs tape of Star Wars a new hope, I believe I rented it, mid 90s. This version was super wide. Way wider than 16:9. You could see way more of the movie that you couldn’t in 16:9 or 4:3. I’ve only seen it once. Do you know what I am talking about by chance? I’d love to see that version again.

But the acting in that movie was trash and b-rate as all hell. Almost all old movies are. Maybe I’m spoiled by a league of actors that can act.. but acting then is a lot like comparing vehicle safety in 1915 to now. Just really wasn’t any.
