Wow! fantastic Dorian workout. I’ve been working this Dorian workout for an hour now, and I’m flowing all over the neck. This has given me a better understanding and I now realize there are so much more possibilities for improvisation over G-7 chord. I will now use what I have learnt on other modes using the same principle. Thanks Joe, you’re Great!

Excellent as always even if I disagree about avoid notes, music is about a subjective relation with the notes being played at a specific time in a song.
@JoeHubbardBass6 жыл бұрын
It's not subjective. Try this exercise: over a min7th chord play a b9 lasting a whole note in duration. You'll notice it destroys the sound of the chord. You can play the "avoid" notes, but you cannot resolve to them and expect it to maintain the integrity of the sound.

Thanks, great lesson as always. The avoid notes on Aeolian and Phrygian became crystal clear to me while working the Minor Scale Passing Tones lesson in the Bassment.

Great workout Joe I agree about the avoid notes in any musical situation...can't remember were I read it but whoever said you are only a semitone away from the right note is talking bullshit, to me music should be pleasing to the ear...a bum note is a bum note and should be avoided at all costs.
@Euklair6 жыл бұрын
that's Victor Wooten kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3W5hYl7g6ycmc0 Highly recommend watching this. His point is not that all notes are equals, his point is train yourself to hit the wrong note, then train yourself to resolve from it. All about tension/resolution when you are going out and back in again.
@JoeHubbardBass6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob! The "key" to this is the concept of resolution. If you resolve your lines by holding the note longer than a quarter note or followed by a rest lasting longer than a quarter note, then you need to resolve to a "good" note. Bum notes can be played, but they must resolve to a note that does not compromise the integrity of the chord sound- this is critical!
@bcboy1236 жыл бұрын
@@JoeHubbardBass I would assume you mean passing tones, chromatic, etc. which can be used but must resolve to a chord tone?
@JoeHubbardBass6 жыл бұрын
@@bcboy123 I'm talking about notes in the scale that can't be resolved to over Min7th chords i.e. b2 & b6 from Phrygian. The Dorian Mode has no avoid notes.
