Actually it's to a movie called, Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Donald Sutherland, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Kevin Spacey. It came out in 1995. That's a whole 7 years before 28 days later, and probably more realistic. The monkey was the carrier (Host 0) of a version of Ebola, called Motaba. It's a hemorrhagic fever. There are a lot of things about cordyceps that the show and the game kind of gloss over. It's a fun premise but ultimately implausible. Jumping from insects to mammals is extremely unlikely. We have an immune system, body heat, and a far, far, far more complex brain. Trying to infect a human brain with cordyceps would be like trying to plant crops on Mars. Remember this is fiction. A fantasy. Fun to think about and immerse yourself in, but not a good reason to threaten the global supply and trade of food.
