Annual contracts is a terrible idea. Teams would then have to negotiate every year to keep a player. Oh, this player just did great in his first season with you? Well now you have to do a new contract that’s worth way more and if you can’t match it, he’s going to another team. Longer contracts also benefit the players because then they have more job security than with an annual contract. It would be true chaos.
