It is a strangely specific condition, and Bell’s palsy would be the most likely by far when you factor in that he’s currently playing basketball (ie, definitely not something like a stroke). It would make sense that a doctor assumed nerve damage, and this is the most common type to present like this. I was hoping it wasn’t though:( just because nerve stuff is always scary, bc even when it’s super likely to get better in a few months, there’s always a small chance it won’t, just like with anything nerve related:(

My dad has bells palsy. A few months before we knew, he fainted on two different occasions right in front of my mom and I had to call 911. We assumed it was a heat stroke because he also puked and we were outside mid summer. One day he complained of serious pain in his left ear. Then two days later, he woke up with the whole left side of his face drooping. We thought he had a stroke. Now his left eye is permanently lazy and whenever he starts getting too stressed, it will swell a little and it will turn red and run water. His left side never fully recovered to what it was and it's been 6 years. I really hope Joel can get this under a certain amount of control. What bells palsy does to a person can make them so insecure and self conscious. I don't want that to happen to him.

When I was 7 or 8 I was sitting next to this kid who just came back to school from having chicken pox and by the time I got home I was screwed. After I had chicken pox I got sick with Bell's Palsy. The good thing about it, is that it's treatable and if it's just a mild case there shouldn't be any long lasting side effects. Sucks for Embiid tho, especially at this point in time.

I've had Bell's Palsy a few years ago, and dissappeared after 5 months by itself. Half of my face was paralyized, couldn't shut my left eye (even to sleep) need a special eye cover, drooling left side of my mouth, hard to even brush my teeth. I think I had it because of stress. One day, I woke up and it's 90% gone.

Bells Palsy often goes away relatively quickly, especially in men. It's common in men between 20-30. I'm a bit more nervous when women get it cause it tends to be harder for them to recover from it.

It's not a sudden weakness in the muscles It is a sudden but most commonly temporary paralysis of the nerves in one side of your face, and yes typically caused by a viral infection, before someone says you don't know what you're talking about, I do I'm speaking from experience happened to me in the late 90's.

As someone who has dealt with bells palsy. My heart goes out to you, I know the PAIN and frustration that comes with it. I'm impressed that you played at all with loud noise being a horrible side effect. Doctors are clueless as to the cause, but I personally believe it's from stress. Get an acupuncturist ASAP! I hope you have 100% recovery. 🫶🏾
