Joel Johnson interviews Syd Mead: Part 1 (BBtv)

In today's episode of BBtv, Boing Boing Gadgets editor Joel Johnson meets with his hero, futurist and artist Syd Mead, to discuss the evolution of conceptual design.
Mead is a former designer for Ford Motor Company and US Steel. His designs have appeared in many movies, including Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner.

A lonnng time ago myself and a friend were building our own Blade Runner Deckard gun replica. It was the year the movie came out (pre internet). My friend and I got adventurous and called directory assistance looking for Syd Mead and when we got a close match - we called him. He not only answered but talked to us teenage kids for twenty minutes!!! He gave us background on the gun design and build. What an amazing, gracious guy!

They cut away once he said "automobiles now are almost an entity unto themselves." I can guess what he means, what with integrated GPS, backup cameras, remote starting, onboard diagnostics, etc... But I still would've wanted to hear his own words and meaning.
