I'm not sure about a championship contender, but NO DOUBT they would be a more legit team to contend with perennially. Even with the usual obstacles at ND, coaching makes all the difference. For anyone who saw the ESPNU all-access piece years ago w/Urban behind the scenes at OSU practices, it was obvious why Meyer is who he is. There's a difference w/the way he runs things, communicates, and executes, and he could absolutely put ND up there as a presumed powerhouse. The unfortunate thing for us fans is that he'll never come.

It used to be that a lot of the players who played at ND came from a huge base of Catholic high schools who would give their right arm to play at ND just because it was Catholic and it had great football. They could get back to that possibly and then get a very good coach and possibly return to greatness. But they have to get back to getting those top kids.

Harrison Smith is widely considered the best Safety in the NFL. He is the highest paid safety. Zach Martin was a first round draft pick and is one of the best linemen on the best offensive line in the NFL. Ronnie Stanley was just selected 6th overall. Jaylon Smith was going to be a top 5 pick before a horrible injury. Golden Tate has had a great career so far. Will Fuller is the best rookie receiver in the NFL. If the draft happened today, Deshone Kizer may be selected number 1 overall. Notre Dame can draw great talent. THE ONLY REASON for the slide since the early 90's is four consecutive terrible coaching hires. Bob Davie unemployed, Ty Willingham unemployed, Charlie Weis unemployed, and soon to be Brian Kelly. The AD's at ND since the 90's are to blame. But its not too late the right the ship if they can land a great proven coach, or a hidden gem. The AD better take this next hire very, very seriously.
@Rjb02247 жыл бұрын
I actually agree with both sides. As a die hard ND fan, I feel it's BK's day to day preparation, game management, and play calling in certain situations that are the real issue. Lots of head scratching penalties, poor red zone execution, and that comes from your day to day preparation. He does know how to recruit, especially in the trenches, and since he's been there he has sent more players to the NFL then probably Willingham, Davie, and Weis combined. I think the jury is still out on BK, but the program is better off from a personnel perspective.

N/ A you do you realize that if Alabama didn't have Nick Saban Alabama would be in the same spot as Notre Dame. When people make ridiculous comments saying that they don't get the talent I laugh because if I recall Notre Dame gets 4-5 star athletes if the school decides to care and make things less strict and a football school like it was and have a coach like Meyer or Saban then Notre Dame would never lose a game don't count out Notre Dame because when things are hard just win one more for the Gipper but I'm saying if they fire Kelly and get a great coach then We will win titles every year.
@johnwatsoniv3847 жыл бұрын
Every year? Yeah, no. ND hasn't done anything of note besides one season since Holts left. The Sabans and Meyers and Harbaughs and Fishers don't win it every year where they're at, and ND doesn't have any great advantage over ANY of those programs except tradition over FSU (but FSU is in the best state for recruiting which at least offsets the tradition aspect). I do believe ND is waiting on Meyer to abandon OSU so they can nab him though, which is why they still have Kelly. That or luring Les Miles is your best shot of coming outta the gutter you've been in for 20 years.

singingchef23 you wrong because that 2014 mia team had 3 first round picks and 7 starters from that draft, we won like 6 games... A team must have good coaching, good coaching can turn a average player good. Coaches have to put the players in position to suceed, talent does matter, it's nothing without coaching and having coaches that believe in you... I seen some trash college players become great in the NFL. ... Nick Saban won right away in a Alabama, he had decent players at that time.
@singingchef238 жыл бұрын
keyron Campbell name the top ND players in the league please? I mean I can't think of more than 10 decent players out of ND. Just because they put players in doesn't mean they produce just like Duke in College basketball. Overhyped, role and bench players at best. 1 or 2 occasionally good players, absolutely no elite players. Miami still players in the league, they are the same quality as the Hurricanes heyday

People are mistaking 'Notre Dame being stuck in the past' with the fact that the alumni and fanbase appreciate the fact that Notre Dame has such a rich and accomplished history. As do the Yankees, Canadiens, Cowboys, etc. Doesn't mean they are stuck; the tradition, the lore, the history is rich, beloved, and cherished. Years from now Alabama fans will reminisce in what's been happening now.
@Britton_Thompson6 жыл бұрын
I'm not as close or plugged in to the ND program as you probably are, but from the outside looking in, it does look like Notre Dame is stuck in the past compared to the other great programs. Take ND's stadium and facilities for example. They only just now renovated them a year ago. Prior to that they still had the old wooden bleachers & scoreboard-- no jumbotron video board. They also still make the players live in the same dormitories as the rest of the student body. Even now they still don't have a football only operations building like all the other major college programs. No, they're still based in the stadium itself. Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and USC all have long, proud histories just as great as Notre Dame's, yet they've all successfully updated their football programs facilities to stay on the cutting edge. Go on here and look at some of the videos of what Alabama has done in the past decade. Alabama stays proactive with their program & facilities, never allowing the competition to catch up. They've also done a magnificent job of combining the past, present, and future into Bryant Denny Stadium. Since all these other traditional superpowers have also been successful in modern times too, all of ND's past success can sorta come off as looking more like ancient history than a proud history.

Taj Murphy - It's only about 150 to drive across the whole state. 90 miles to the east of Chicago is halfway across Indiana and out of the Chicago area. Some may go to Chicago to hang out on weekends but that is a long trip due to traffic.
@TheDaddynate8 жыл бұрын
Taj Murphy - Stanford sits in the core of the Bay area in Palo Alto. Tons of nightlife, tons of beautiful people etc. Head and shoulders a cooler college to go to than Notre Dame. The athletes needed to compete on a major level are increasingly less about school, more about the sport every generation. You think Notre Dame stinks now, in 20 years they'll be on the level of the service academies. The southern schools with the best facilities and coaches will dominate college football until another trend comes along.
@TheDaddynate8 жыл бұрын
Well ND lost to Navy, so maybe that 20 is more like 5 years and they'll struggle to be a .500 team. Should've joined a conference and loosened the grip on academics from the athletics if they want to really stay competitive. Notre Dame is a good job, but no longer a great job. Hypothetically, yes, you still can win a national championship at ND, but it's becoming harder with each year of mediocrity. The things that gave ND an advantage over everyone else for so long have either been neutralized, or in some cases, removed entirely. The reason I don't believe you can still classify Notre Dame in the same rarified air as Alabama, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, and Ohio State is because of location. In particular, the dismal recruiting grounds in the northernmost Midwest states. Notre Dame has to rely on national recruiting to be a championship contending program, because not only is their "seat of power" not very good to begin with, they'll also be battling Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State for the few blue chip prospects in their region. With those programs having more recent successes and a higher prestige in the eyes of high school kids nowadays, Notre Dame is left in the most unenviable position of all. There's also no guarantee you can get those prospects qualified and admitted either. While it may be true that great coaches like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, and Jim Harbaugh could make ND a legitimate powerhouse again, those types of coaches most likely wouldn't want to go there in the first place. According to the HS recruiting services, the state of Alabama is the #4 state in producing talent. The state of California is #2; Ohio #7; Texas #3. Even when Alabama, USC, Texas, and Ohio State are down, they will be more likely to land those elite coaches capable of reversing their fortunes since they have all the money, exposure, prestige, and history that Notre Dame offers, but with the advantage of better recruiting resources to tap into right away without having to prove themselves on the field first.

He makes some valid points. I think one reason they struggle today is because kids don't see it as a glitz and glamour school. Since social media has taken over society we have become prisoners of the moment. Nowadays it's all about glitz, glamour, and being popular. Most kids aren't playing football for a degree anyway because you don't need a degree for the NFL. I seriously think Notre Dame needs a change and it starts with Swarbrick and Kelly.

Because a "great" job would entail being able to win national championships. Notre Dame's time has passed. The days of Rocket Ismail and Tim Brown enticing a Randy Moss to want to come are over. The days of Notre Dame having a monopoly on TV are over. Add their academic standards and bad weather and Notre Dame will never be the college football force it once was. This generation of young kids wants the SEC, Ohio State, Michigan. USC and Texas will eventually be forces again. The advent of social media and Saturday football games on numerous channels makes the chances of Notre Dame rising back to the college football elite status on a consistent basis unlikely.
@PS-vc2yz8 жыл бұрын
The weather is just one factor. Not the only factor. Coaching absolutely matters. You are making my point. No top college or pro coach is going to go to Notre Dame and fight with admissions on elite players. So how can it be a great football job if they can't get great football coaches? Bob Davie? Tyrone Willingham? Charlie Weiss? Brian Kelly? And when you talk about Stanford, are they winning a national championship anytime soon?
