Deion Sanders, Colorado becoming must-see TV
The “Coach Prime” phenomenon continues to scale new heights. The average viewership of 9.304 million for Saturday night’s Colorado-Colorado State game ranks as the fifth-highest number for a regular-season game ever on ESPN.
Seven of the top 10 games on the ESPN chart are non-conference bouts, and nine of the 10 were played in September, when enthusiasm is high early in the season.
At 2:15am ET, as the game was wrapping up in overtime, it still drew 8.23 million viewers. That audience was more than 1 million viewers larger than the peak viewership of any other college football game this week.
The Buffs and Rams peaked at 11-11:15pm ET with 11.095 million viewers.
Fox’s insights and analytics guru, Michael Mulvihill, even chimed in from the rival network with this highlight from Colorado-Colorado State: That 2:15am ET audience topped every non-sports prime-time show this week except “60 Minutes,” which also featured Colorado coach Deion Sanders.
Speaking of “60 Minutes” on CBS, Deion’s presence there lifted the venerable Sunday night news program to 11.8 million viewers from around 7:45-8:45pm ET. The program had the benefit of Cowboys-Jets in CBS’ Week 2 NFL national window as a lead-in (25.8 million), as well as a rerun of the pilot for “Yellowstone” just after it (6.8 million).
That’s the best figure for the show this year to date, according to SBJ ratings chief Austin Karp, topping the 11.2 million viewers from the show on Jan. 8 (also an NFL national window lead-in). It’s the best for any “60 Minutes” since Jan. 10, 2021, which had 14.8 million viewers with an NFL Wild Card game lead-in (Bears-Saints).
