Joel Moses earned a PhD in mathematics at MIT in 1967. Since that time, his interests have focused on computer science, artificial intelligence, and engineering systems. He began his career as a professor in Course 6, which at the time was called Electrical Engineering and is now Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He later became chair of the department, dean of the School of Engineering, and MIT's provost. He is currently one of just 13 Institute Professors and is acting director of the Center for Technology, Policy, and Industrial Development.
