I see it as this. Ellie is the only person to find herself again, by the act of forgiving and letting go (therefore the flashback). Ellie accepts what happens and forgives both Joel and Abby. This is also symbolically shown by Ellie not being able to play the “i’d surely lose myself” part anymore. Ellie is the only one that is able to save herself and move on

She also lost (from what we can tell) Dina and JJ. I felt that the whole theme of the game was "loss". Some of the flashbacks of Ellie and Joel; Abby and her Dad were harking back to a time of innocence. When they lost their loved ones that innocence is lost. The worst part about it is that Joel had no choice...the Fireflies would never have let Ellie be woken up to choose. And Joel would’ve killed them all as revenge for killing Ellie. Then, Ellie gets mad because Joel loved her so much, he literally sacrificed the world for her. And for some reason, we’re supposed to care about some random character because she lost a person who forced Joel to kill them in order to escape...OK
@givrocklee4 жыл бұрын
Lily Anderson that’s a good analysis and a fair point. But If you were in abbys shoes would you do any different? You don’t have to like the character but you should empathise with her struggle. @@TheOutsider69 As a long time fan of Naughty Dogs' works, this game was, unfortunately, an utter disappointment for me if I am being honest. The narrative felt completely bland and rushed (7 years btw...) and somehow the story seemed to be all over the place. I only ever felt joy when moments such as flashbacks of Joel and Ellie popped up. The other characters such as Dina, Jesse, Abby, Owen, etc were written quite poorly and barely had an impact on the story, they just had no weight. The only characters that I ever felt were even remotely interesting were Yara and Lev. Overall, the game is not a horrible game, it definitely had its moments. The scenery that this game offers is just spectacular and the music is nostalgic. Let me also mention this [ SPOILER ]; as much as I love Joel, the decision to have him die is fine by me, but, what pissed me off was how it was executed; completely disrespecting and ignoring his character that was built up from the previous LOU; they simply dismantled his arc. Although this is merely my own personal take on the game, if you see it in a different light then that is fine!

@TheMarc1k14 жыл бұрын
Wow, well I'm happy that you got to experience it fully without the idiocy surrounding it... hopefully? At the end of the day he's a fictional character but it takes a special bit of media to make you really feel that loss, but you can't let it effect your life like that dude - honestly Part 2 itself feels like it takes you through the grieving process, or it did for me - the story definitely impacted my mood for a good few days but not to the extent of having nightmares. Joel dying the way he did is very in keeping with the bleak and horrible world he and everyone else has come to live in though, put the enemies he's made along the way on top of his actions in the first game and well, you'd have to almost go out of your way to expect things to go well for him and frankly speaking he was quite lucky, it was only four years spent in Jackson but a decent chunk of that with Ellie on good terms with him and him living in general peace, I'd say it was probably his happiest/safest years since before the outbreak so I mean there is that - he didn't die a coward, his character wasn't disgraced and he'd had the best possible time leading up to his death, the cherry on top being his and Ellie's last conversation which personally makes me feel like he could accept his death a lot easier, he even saw that she came for him when he was in trouble all but confirming her words the day before, he was sent off in a brutal fashion but also with closure, something he was incredibly lucky to receive. Personally speaking I'm channeling a lot of my love for this game into learning Future Days, I already play guitar thankfully so it's not taking long at all to get better but many others have also either started to learn the songs in the game and or just pick up guitar generally, I honestly recommend something like this for you, find some way you can creatively output your feelings for the characters and the game but try not to wallow in that feeling, even if it were a real person who had died it shouldn't stop you living your life normally, you just have to do what you gotta do to grieve and then get back up again.

You know what’s sad, Ellie doesn’t forgive Joel until the very end of the game, thats when she finally understands why he did what he did, and that she would also do the same for him, not until he’s dead does she truly realize just how much she loved him and that she would have done anything for him, even if it meant dooming the entire world in the process...that’s why she breaks down when letting Abby go, because the whole thing runs much deeper than Abby, the thought that she never got to tell Joel she forgives him, that she loves him...that he never knew, that knowledge is what has its hooks in her throughout the entire game, and she thinks killing Abby is the only way to make it right, not until she has Abby at her mercy does she realize that killing her won’t fix anything.

Killing Abby wouldn’t have brought Joel back, and I think that’s something Abby learned after killing Joel in vengeance for her father, it still didn’t bring him back. Listening to this song after finishing the game just breaks my heart. Joel truly cared for Ellie's wellbeing, even after all his crimes because of a destroyed world, he's trying to become the father he was before Sarah's death. He's making all these efforts to have a normal life again and erase his past. It's rare that I get so emotionally attached to a character, Joel is more than a father for Ellie, he is a father for the player and we're learning to appreciate Ellie's character along with him... Unlike many people saying that his death was shit, for me his death was really sad and violent but also necessary, for a moment he wasn't anymore the hunter he was during all these years, he was the trapped prey and it shows us that he isn't anymore the "monster" of the 1st opus who could kill an entire group of men and never crumble or feel pity, he was a real human and his feelings for Ellie were genuine.

"if I ever were to lose you, I'd surely lose myself". This makes me cry. Joel always put his life to risk to save ellie coz he don't want to lose something precious to him again, like his daughter, but now he cannot protect ellie anymore rip JOEL I wish this was all a dream...😢

MasterGamer23 I loved the game so much. I feel people are just disappointed with it and I don’t understand. The character development is beautiful and amazing, and all the emotional bits and pieces are perfectly in place. Not to mention the ending looks worse than I think it is and people hate the ending for that. Ellie doesn’t get justice. Spoilers ahead. It looks like Ellie has lost everyone she loves, and because of her need for revenge lost the woman she loves. But if you look back to when she was in Santa Barbara, she doesn’t have the bracelet that Dina had given her. It isn’t even in her backpack. But then when she gets back to the farm, she’s wearing it. Also she has nothing in her backpack when she gets back, there’s no way she’d just leave her weapons and whatnot. And Dina loved her. Even if Dina didn’t want to be with her anymore because of her need for revenge, she still would have at least left a note. And Jesse’s parents did give them a note saying that they’re always welcome in Jackson. So I think that Ellie got back and her and Dina decided to start a life in Jackson together, and since it looks like Ellie’s fingers had at least a few months to heal, this seems to be her coming back to remember good times with Joel. And she left everything there to let it all go, let it be the past. If this theory of mine is correct, it’s a fantastic ending to the game with no loose ends. I hope it’s true. It makes sense with all the clues. One last clue I noticed is Ellie wasn’t wearing Joel’s jacket when she got back. There’s no way she’d ever get rid of it, so it’s stored somewhere right? Possibly in Jackson where she might’ve come from. I love this story so much, cried many many tears and had my heart both shattered and filled. Such good and realistic character developments and a great story.

This story is really sad and I'm so pissed noughty dog did us,the fans of the series dirty like that . they had 7 years to make a new story and that is what they've gone with. I expect Neil to make a dlc that would do right by the fans , so disappointed.
@itsmrdaan59214 жыл бұрын
Ellie is the only one that is able to save herself and move on.
@andrewh9784 жыл бұрын
Tomer Yohai idk how you got that second interpretation, the game makes it pretty clear that Ellie forgives Joel at the end. And idk why you were expecting their relationship to be perfect after what Joel did, he robbed her of her life meaning something and then lied to her about it. Of course she’d be angry when she found out the full truth
@andrewh9784 жыл бұрын
ItsMrDaan I think that Abby serves as a symbolic parallel for Joel, and Ellie had to learn to forgive Abby in order to fully forgive Joel for how he wronged her. She chose love over hate, and in the end she loved Joel and knew he loved her, even if he’d slipped up
@itsmrdaan59214 жыл бұрын
Andrew Hiner that’s exactly what i thought too. Hate only builds on hate and brings destruction. Only by letting go can one move on. Only now can she finally forgive Joel. I think it’s beautiful.

People can say what they want about killing Joel off early but i love how this game portrays Joel and Ellies relationship. The flashbacks shows how much Ellie means to Joel and in Joels mind he made the right decision and Ellie is still willing to forgive him because she realises how much Joels loves her and she also loves him. It breaks my heart that they were gonna watch a movie together the night Joel dies. I think this game shows time and time again that in this world there are no villains or heroes, people do what they do because of love and survival. Joel kills the fireflies because of his love for Ellie, Abby kills Joel because she loved her father and Ellie wants revenge because she loves Joel but im glad that in the end she doesnt think its worth it.

I think it was mainly the logic that led to it, and not so much the death as sad it was, Joel wouldn't tell strangers who he was where he lived and generally anything that would compromise his or anyone else's safety, fault of Neil deuckman desiring shock value and losing sight in many assumptions, nonetheless your not wrong for appreciating it whether it's right or wrong or illogical an such, if you enjoyed it that's more power to you, just hope the next one will make more sense for all our sakes 😁

They wanted a realistic story, Joel is just a survivor, he can die in a shit way just like everyone else. The game show how things never go the way we want, and can always get worse, just like in real life, no matter the reasons behind every action, life isn't fair. Naughty Dog managed to make people feel ange, hate, and a feeling of revenge just like Ellie. Most people didnt like because there is no happy ending. Every time in the game u are anxious or sad, just like Ellie. I dont think the story is bad, is very good. Is just fucking sad :( Life just isn't fair and the game show that very well.

Lucas Morais while your points make sense my issue with the story is that Joel’s death felt forced because he totally acted out of character. The previous game established that Joel is wary of strangers because he is a survivor; yet in this game we willingly tells Abby’s group his name and where he’s from. It’s lazy decisions like that which make his death feel rushed when it could’ve been more meaningful. In addition, I do agree with your point that this game was realistic, but my issue is that if life is so unfair and video games are an escape from that unfairness, it seems intruding to force that on me. Personally I don’t think the harsh realities of life and a good story are mutually exclusive-but I’m not saying this game needed a happy-go-lucky everything is great ending, just one with resolution and a sense of completion. The ending felt empty to the extent of which the entire story was meaningless and a bit preachy

During gameplay in a music store I came across a Pearl Jam poster for their 2013 album and text my dad about it with a screenshot because Pearl Jam is his #1 favorite band. My dad’s 50th birthday is in a week and I can’t go see him because of coronavirus. Then I come to find out this song to Ellie is a Pearl Jam song.... it hit me harder than it should’ve

That’s funny, I didn’t know either and my dad loves Pearl Jam. So when I found the music store I also sent a picture of the poster, ofc my dad already knew Pearl Jam was in it from PJ’s twitter😂. Edit: my dad was also going to see Pearl Jam and Covid :(

Pearl Jam is my favorite band and I was already crazy when I was playing and this part came, plus the lightning bolt post of their album and them being in Seattle, where PJ came from alongside the other grunge bands ❤❤❤❤

Hearing Ellie sing the lines, "I'd surely lose myself." she lost Joel and then she lost herself and went down a road of destruction that only led to more pain and watching her try to play at the end I was just like :( the entire time

Kinda similar to what going on with me my ex girlfriend was the reason I was suicidal before because we broke up and some else that’s personal happened so in a way I want revenge on her and her entire friends you know I lost myself but I don’t care I want my revenge

@@shadowfuture1378 I'm really sorry to hear you're going through that. I was in a really abusive relationship and for a long time I was just angry and hurt and wanted revenge but I realized the mental toll it had on me was pain being revisited and I had to learn to let go and move on. I hope what you're going through doesn't lead to you feeling more pain cause I understand that feeling and it's not something I want anyone else to feel. I hope you're okay.

Don't you love how his joke was a lame punny one like all those books Ellie picks up and reads in part 1?

I have cried out every single tear I had listening to it the first time. And every time I think about it, I cry again. Here I am, playing it to my guitar, shedding tears, having those two in my mind. The emotions, the journey Joel and Ellie gave us are absolutely something I will have forever with me in my heart. Thanks for everything

Lyrics (the name of the song is Future Days by Pearl Jam): If I ever were to lose you I'd surely lose myself Everything I have found here I've not found by myself Try and sometimes you'll succeed To make this man of me All of my stolen missing parts I've no need for anymore I believe And I believe 'cause I can see Our future days Days of you and me Back when I was feeling broken I focused on a prayer You came deep as the ocean It's something something out there here All the complexities and games No one wins, but somehow, they still play All the missing crooked hearts They may die, but in us they live on I believe And I believe 'cause I can see Our future days Days of you and me When hurricanes and cyclones rage When wind turned dirt to dust When floods they came or tides they raised ever Closer became us All the promises at sundown I meant them like the rest All the demons used to come around I'm grateful now they've left So persistent in my ways, Here a angel, lying here to stay No resistance, no alarms, please this is just too good to be gone I believe And I believe 'cause I can see Our future days Days of you and me You and me It's you and me

It has taken me two months to start a replay of this game. I was so depressed after it was done. I felt the same after RDR 1 & 2. Damn I miss Joel! Ellie trying to play this song at the end was heartbreaking....

Anyone else see at the end of the game, joel and ellie are talking. She walks away and you can see Joel’s eyes start to fill with tears.
