Referring to Meghan Markle as a "Hollywood superstar" is overstating things quite a lot. She was a relative unknown until her association with Prince Harry, and her show Suits, while I understand achieved respectable ratings, aired on the minor USA network and also was unknown to most Americans in a very crowded TV landscape. I'm sure she's a lovely person, but it would be safe to say that marrying Harry is the most notable thing she's done by a wide margin.

Kevin Miller I may be the only one on the planet that feels this way, but I am concerned for Prince Harry. Hopefully, I am wrong, but I see Meghan Markle as a bit of a fraud. Since 2011, she has been married, divorced, dated 2 others, and now she will become a British Princess on the 19th. Also, lets say she is seriously in love, then how long will it last? When any relationship requires so much giving...it is doomed from the start. 1. Meghan is giving up her career, which at one point she wanted so badly that it ended her first marriage. 2. Meghan is giving up her American citizenship (already started the process). 3. She is giving up her freedom to just take an afternoon stroll alone, amongst several other things. Even President Obama said that never being alone, but feeling lonely was an issue at times, when it came to 8 years of Secret Service protective detail. There is nothing that Prince Harry is having to give up. Thanks for your post Keith, it just got me thinking... No hate please, just my opinion.

Slight correction. Only people who are up to 6th in line to the throne have to ask the queen for permission to marry. If she says no or they don’t ask permission, they could still marry but they would or their children would not be allowed to take the throne.

My grandmother's father was, apparently, very strict and permission as expected. He had to be Catholic, had to be Italian, and bonus points if he was from the same neighborhood in New York. For everyday folks, I don't think it is necessary to "ask permission" of the parents to marry their daughter. But in my experience, it gets things off to a WONDERFUL start with the in-laws. So it's a very nice thing to do.

American here. I made darn sure my daughter's suitor asked my permission. He came to me man to man, asked my permission, laid out his plan on how he was going to support and care for my daughter and we had a very lengthy talk. He proposed to her two days later. Call me old school, but if he didn't come to me, there would have been a lot of grief. It's American Gentlemanly tradition for the groom to seek permission.

👑 It is good that times have changed and the Queen is more lenient about marriage approval now. In her own life her uncle Edward VIII had to abdicate the throne to be with the divorced American, Wallis Simpson, her sister Margaret didn't get to marry the person she loved, and Charles shouldn't have been coerced into marrying Diana just to have the "right" type. I would guess she has seen the heartache it causes by interfering. It is admirable that as much as things have changed in her lifetime, a woman her age can be flexible rather than rigid. And I've heard it reported that she adores Harry.

I’m an American in a conservative, traditional area. I *think* a lot of people still ask “permission.” Though it’s more phrased “blessing” than “permission” sometimes. I know my husband talked to my parents beforehand, and I’m only in my 30s (was in my 20s then...so I’m not “old”) and it was what I expected of him! That said, it wasn’t a surprise for my family and I don’t think he expected anything but a yes. It’s just a respectful formality.

As far as an heir of the throne, not only must they get the monarch's approval, but also the Parliament and the Church on England. That is why when Prince Charles uncle King Edward wasn't allowed to marry Wallace Simpson. If it only took permission of the monarch, King Edward would have just granted himself permission to marry her. It was the government and the church that would not allow it.

Doing some research....it is tradition that the groom wear a military uniform during the wedding. When Prince William was married, he could have worn his RAF uniform since he hold the rank of Flight Lieutenant in that service, but he chose to wear the red uniform of the Irish Guards, were he holds an honorary rank of Colonel. Harry is not in the military any more, but he did make the rank of captain in the British Army, so I believe he can still wear his uniform during the wedding.

Californian here, last time in London in '05. What I think makes London so vibrant and relevant and admired is that everything is there. Over here, the financial center of the US is New York, the governmental center is Washington D.C., the entertainment center is Los Angeles. London is all three of those things in one place. The U.S's great architectural city is Chicago and New Orleans is known for fine dining ... again London's got that covered. "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life." - Samuel Johnson. Prince William is a Colonel in the Irish Guards. He also knew that he was going to be created Baron Carrickfergus, an Irish title, on his wedding day. As male members of the Royal Family traditionally wear military uniforms to their weddings, that explains his uniform choice.
