I just came back from visiting Cairo and Giza, and also had terrible experience from the moment I arrived at airport, until I left. From having to bribe airport staff, to getting ripped off by taxi drivers, shop owners and restaurants and all the “tour guides” who just take you to overly expensive shops. We saw policemen and airport staff smoking in the middle of the arrival terminal and the whole airport smells like smoke. Streets are extremely dirty and almost all animals (camels, horses and donkeys) we saw were in rough conditions. Everyone wanted tips, and no genuine interaction with any locals over my stay there. Visit the neighboring Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria instead. Locals there are far more hospitable

One of the things I hated the most is they expect you tip every time you use the bathroom. I always had my own tissue, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, etc so I never had to use anything of there’s but yet they still expected a tip. I gave one tip when I first arrived and saw how things operated, after that never again. Tipping to use the bathroom, bare foolishness!!!

@@Joelfriend Kinda had the same experience on my vacation in Egypt, we had a nice tour by a man in Khan El Khalili. (The market in Caïro), We ask different times if he wanted some kind of money for it Just so we would had any misunderstandings in the end ( Also we of course were aware it was likely he wanted something for like everyone does). He really was like he didn't need any. He really seemd like an elder who just wanted bring a positive image to the country. He brought us to some shops from people he knew, so we though he just wanted to help some friends in the shops (we also bought some souvernirs out of generousity.) We ate food with him (payed like 50 EGP each) , talked about Egypt, he even guides us a Mosque where we donated some money (like 100EGP ), He talked about the Islam and how it helpes people who are in need of help. All these experiences were stuff we were willing to pay for (we asked beforehand) but he didn't wanted any. At the very end, we wanted to go back to the hotel because it was late, so we shook hands, and suddenly he started to be aggressively asking for tip bla bla etc.. Because I had in mind we might woudn't accept the tour if he asked money for it beforehand, we gave him like 150 EGP (It was our first day, so we didnt really know the right prices back then). He even started more aggresive he wanted 200 EGP. The experience really sucks, because you doný know who you can trust / makes friends with. Our trip was still a very unique experience, especially more south in Aswan), there we met some really nice and hostile Nubians. Also we experienced that how more you are in Egypt the better you can handle the situations.

I guess if you have no self respect then how can you respect others? We the tourists are the reason Egypt is still alive, imagine if no tourists come to Egypt next year, what would happen to Egypt? What would happen to the people? What would happen to the vendors and restaurants?? Egyptians must welcome and respect all tourists ,be honest, be friendly, be helpful, be respectful. Guides are amongst the worst frauds and scammers. The one who took us around the Egyptian Museum, the pyramids and the Sphinx kept stopping the minibus and taking us into shops full of old tat because the owners were friends and family of his. He said "You have a beautiful lunch in Cairo today!" several times, and took us to an all you can eat dive with bland, boring and cheap food you'd not even pay £5 or $5 for in the West. In a gallery shop I bought a papyrus scroll which I was told was 500 Egyptian Pounds (about £13 Sterling). I didn't have many Egyptian Pounds left so paid by card, and when I checked my online banking later and found my card had been charged £50. Total lowlife.

I have to say. Going to a country like Egypt, and its not limited to Egypt, unless you personally know the people you plan to interact with or in some form hired by you ie you're on a paid tour with a professional guide, trust no one. Going into a country like that, whether is be Egypt, Pakistan, Thailand, New Guinea, Indonesia, you're the stranger and to the locals trying to make a living you're simple a possible source of income so of course that their first objective. Trust no one, expect nothing, and you wont be disappointed. Trust everyone, and expect pure good hearted honesty and you've set yourself up for disappointment.

@@skiesbornet1332 I am so sorry for those tourists who had this bad scam experiences, I have been watching many videos like that. I totally believe it is cultural, not religious, and related also to the level of education and poverty. Most of well educated people in Egypt will be so friendly and offers lots of help and hospitalities to tourists in Egypt. Those scams come from lay uneducated people, who, unfortunately, are all over the places around the touristic attraction, under the eyes, again unfortunately, of the local authorities. In front of Ifel tower, I was about to have my money stolen three times, same had my friends. Same thing happened to me in Gar Du Nord in Paris, where a couple of French people were trying to open my back-bag twice while I was watching. All touristic attractions will also attract scammers, however, I agree, the local authorities need to do more efforts to clean all these areas from those bad scammers. Final notice, I am hoping the future will witness a big step forwards regarding improving tourists' experience in Egypt.

I got back from Egypt a month ago. It was amazing. You have to have a sternness to yourself and be as self-sufficient as possible. You'll be an easy target if you look lost or confused. Don't let locals persuade you into anything. Business owners will be more than happy to accommodate you, even if you're getting the tourist price (still crazy low costs). Very important y'all, use Uber it's extremely efficient and they will take you from Cairo to the pyramids for less than 10 bucks. You can tip on the app in EGP and it's insanely cheap. Most rides were around 20 EGP around Cairo, and I happily tipped another 20 EGP (like one USD) I need to make a video explaining how positive my experience was, and how to not be such a pushover in Egypt. PS. The big dude looked shady from the jump. He wouldn't even look at you all in the eyes, he was eyeballing around very suspiciously. Also put two and two together, why would those two be so closely associated?

I was in Luxor in January and got scammed too: some local guy suggested to show me a "good spices store" where I bought spices and tea on 135 USD! Tourist places in Egypt are crowded with such persons who try to charge you 10 times more than they should. Nevertheless I've met a lot of nice and geniune people in Egypt too. Luxor International hosiptal gaved me a treatment for a gastrointestinal disease for free. And a guy from a Luxor railway station, Omar, shared with me his dinner while I was waiting for my train. Frankly saying I returned home from my Egypt trip exhausted and a bit disappointed due to a disease I got there and hundreds of sticky hucksters who followed me almost everywhere. But still I would be glad to go there again someday.

Good video! I think something to take from this as a red flag, is when they told you he was very important. You have to think, why would someone very important want to talk to me of all people? They are trying to flatter you and get you on their good side, be cautious in the future when being told you will meet/ chat to someone who is very important or has great influence. Those people are probably busy! haha

I am Egyptian born, and unfortunately what you experienced in Egypt is too common. My apologies and it breaks my heart as Islam teaches them to be true not fake, and they look at it as business especially when foreigners are involved. I do not know how long Egyptian have been like that nor why but have my theories. I do think education is one factor. When traveling through Egypt I strongly suggest having the knowledge relating to common travel to knows. And be very weary of any Contract or Doc you may sign.

I had the opposite experiences in Luxor, I got invited to peoples house for dinner with their families. Their wives cooked special meals that I'd never eaten. I took gifts as you do anywhere in the world. The hardest thing I found in Egypt was constantly being asked to drink tea with people. Yes there are street sellers trying to sell tours, horse rides etc but its not a real no unless its the third time. Understand the hustle, they don't sell they don't eat.

I am pretty sure you would never follow random people in your home country. Just apply the same logic to countries you travel to, and don't follow strangers to shady streets in other countries. One travel vlogger once said, whatever keeps you alive in your country, will keep you alive in other countries. We have a tendency to be overly relaxed, distract ourselves easily in a new environment and trust everyone when we are travelling. Don't. Because you wouldn't do that back home. Would you follow a stranger calling you to a dark alley in your country? Probably not. So don't do it in egypt either.

Similar experience myself ... actually it generally isn't the amount of money lost (which isn't much), but the deception particularly when it's coming from children or in places like mosques like I've experienced; once corruption extends to higher levels of society and politicians it's the point of no return, I know from my parents' country

I am half Egyptian but i know Egypt only as a tourist. So i know some things about these scams. To be honest, that wasnt a bad deal. They showed u around, you had dinner, you enjoyed their hospitality for over an hour and they gave u a good experience overall. Of course they expect something in return. You are in a tourist area. 20 bucks each for this experience is absolutely ok. Real scammers would have charged you way more money.

omg we had a similar thing happen in Luxor! We stayed on the west bank for a week so 'made friends' with one of the restaurant owner we always walked by......decided to eat there one night....he didn't have a menu just 'yeah, salad, chicken, rice, good good!'....we ordered two meals. luckily demanded to know the price and it was wayyyyyy more than anywhere else! When we were like 'no, we're good, we don't need food' he came back and said it was that price for both of us combined, not each as he initially told us...still our most expensive meal in Luxor, but at least it was only half what he was trying to charge us...

It could happen to the most experienced traveler. My friend and I were scammed for a lot more money in Rome and Athens. I have friends who were scammed in Moscow, Istanbul, Panama City & Argentina. you learn:) I have first did 'serious travelling' (in India) some 20+ years ago when I was 20..... oh, and I learned a lot! And since then, things described in the video do not happen to me, including during my several trips to Egypt:) Key is to be polite but firm, be able to say 'no', be able to unambiguously agree any price in advance, be able to distinguish genuinely friendly people from people who are just trying to make some bucks -and (equally important!) understand there is nothing wrong about that as I am basically a lottery winner just because of where I happen to be born, and they do what they could to make some money! Once you figure few basic things out, you are OK Its a learning process and what these guys describe is part of it (I assume this is their first independent trip outside Europe)
