I find Steve Kaufman comprehensible input method to learn languages very useful to learn piano. I've learned 4 languages to a C1 level by doing that. I play the bandoneon since I was a kid but I started playing the piano and I kind of use this method adapted to music learning and my piano skills are upgrading incredibly. Greetings from Argentina, love your videos!!

Ok, so this is the kind of video that just hits you from left field and has the potential to change your life. I really appreciate that you've taken a book that many people would very likely overlook due entirely to its title, dismissing it as niche advice, and relating it to what so many people want to do better in their lives ... learn. After about 4 videos of yours, I'm definitely a fan and subscriber, Joel. Thank you for this video of unexpected wisdom!

Thanks Jason! I only know of that book because someone I respect recommended it to me, so this video's my attempt to pay it forward. Shame I did it so early in the channel's life when my editing and camera weren't the best, but I'm glad it's useful. Check out the Conflict Communication video if you haven't already - another life changer for me.

Dude!!! I love Dave McCleod. His channel is so inspiring since he's a prime example of a life long learner. I've been curious about this book, but was bewildered that you made a video about it! Been enjoying your videos. Great content and attitude towards life

Haaa thanks very much! I used to be pretty into bouldering, but it was actually Mark Twight (of 300 training fame) who recommended this one. It's a banger!

I'm learning Polish so have it broadly broken into speaking/listening/reading/writing/grammar/vocab - and further subcategories. Speaking is definitely my weakest area, so I have weekly lessons to help. I so appreciate you talking about the dip - I recognised all the aspects you spoke about in myself. The initial regular progress from starting out is long behind me and mastery seems far away. This video was so helpful and has given me a boost of motivation to get back to my daily vocab remembering, vocab building, grammar drills. Thank you 🙌🏼

This video has taken the #1 spot in my "Discipline" playlist from the video that one that has had it for years. "Overnight Success" by Gary V really is about loving the grind. But this expands on that and explains why it works much much better. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I feel like this video was a "little hinge that will swing a big door" in my life.

As a rock climber, I read this book a few years back and picked it up for a re-read this week. One of the things I love about it is the author is not just writing about climbing hard/performance. And his youtube channel is great!

This was really helpful and inspiring. I feel like you are a kindred spirit. There is so much information out there that I want to learn to do it all. I found your channel because I want to learn piano, but that's on top of woodworking, 3D printing, electrical work around the house. They are all skills that I don't need to master but become competent and comfortable. I'm reading more books too. It's going to be hard not to watch all of your videos over the next month.

I bought, and read, this a good few years back on your recommendation. Thought it was decent, but it didn't really make a big impact on me - I suspect I got too sidetracked by the climbing "details", since I'm not a climber. I will be revisiting it as soon as I've finished my current book though - cheers!

There's certainly a lot of good stuff in there - too much to even cover in this video! But yeah, it's a bit like panning for gold amid the climbing stuff

It's the exact experience of BJJ. Someone shows you a hip escape or torreando on day 1. Three years later the success rate at any one thing is tiny and the improvements incremental but having done 4-6 hours a week for 40-45 weeks a year for three years. There are moments where it now works but even 12 months ago it never worked. I really think you need to be willing to suffer and be a bit of a massochist to start something new. It's much harder at 50 to accept you'll be the worst in the room. More so when you may be used to be very good in other fields

@@JoelSnape1 Thanks Joel. You remind me of a jacked Tim Ferriss. Would be cool if you did a video on which style of MMA (boxing, Jujitsu, Muay Thai etc) you would recommend FIRST to someone just getting into it. IE: is there an optimal sequence to which to learn first? Does learning one negatively affect learning the other etc. Thank you!

@@PeterPaulMasigan this is a great question and I do actually have a good answer to it (I think). Consider it done. Ps I take this as either a massive compliment or a neg of Tim Ferriss 😆

I was wondering why KZbin proposed your piano learning video... then I worked out that it is because my first Karate master is also Kendo master while second is also Ju Jitsu master and then because you speak English with a British accent and, last but not least, you played When the Saints, the song I have been singing since Nursery School, my mother says... Ciao from an ex Londoner, ex Karate black belt ex fit person, ex ex ex ex...
