FULL Chiang Rai Playlist • Chiang RAI, Thailand
In this video, join us for a different view of Thailand. Is it a view that's set back in time 30 years? To a time where there was never any tourism here to begin with? I don't like to see Thailand like this, and of course no one does! If you do have plans to visit though (and if you're ready with a vaccine and paperwork of course) then come to Thailand, plan a visit, I know that the Thai small shop and business owners will be so glad to see you! And the beauty and natural sights, well, of course those are all just as great as they've ever been.
We are in Chiang Rai province... and we (and now you!) are basically alone here. Without taking any risks, and without taking advantage of any local Covid measures, Li and I are able to complete a very short distance 7-day trip from our home in Chiang Mai to the bordering province of Chiang Rai.*
Acknowledging that this is a brutally tough time for anyone trying to make a living doing business related to tourism, Li and I are still happy to visit whatever places are open, pay for any services that are still available, and just generally offer our support (whether its money, or just a smile and friendly conversation). I hope these videos can offer you some motivation, and maybe even encourage you to do the same when you can!! To give you some honest details into my own life, it is small things like this that offer a light to me, a huge amount of hope to me during these days - the feeling of being a blessing to others is something that will always remind us who we are, and who we all can be to each other and for each other! Again, I hope I can encourage you to do what you can whenever you have the chance :)
So!
In this series you have seen us visit many mountain towns and villages, only one of which were we allowed to stay overnight (Mae Salong) - we have met with many amazing families and great stories along the way, and we're proud to share all of those videos with you! At the end of the day however, it is still quite obvious to see, although we are actively trying to connect with "normal" people living in all these towns, the Covid virus closures have almost completely ended the business in so many areas in Thailand - especially those reliant on tourism -
In many parts of the world too I'm sure... but there aren't too many places with such a high percentage of people's income that is directly related to international tourism.
*All in all, the total distance of this trip was under 400km. This is also the 1 video out of the 7 though where we actually had to turn around/not allowed to pass a certain way. Most of the roads in northern Thailand are open - if you want to stay anywhere/visit anywhere, you have to call ahead to make sure the place is still open/still there - if you don't stop, and/or you stay by yourself, there is really no issue or cause for concern.
I hope this finds you well, I always appreciate the time you take to write a comment to me, sharing your thoughts or, of course, which parts of the video you enjoyed :). Thanks as always! Much love. See you for the next one! - Joel and Li

It is refreshing to see that there are people who are not afraid to lift up the name of our saviour. 45 years of marriage and still going is a blessing. So many people say 'for better for worst in sickness and in health until death do us part but as soon as trouble comes they take off. I pray for another 45 more years and so on Ron.

I just love the way you are able to be aware of life at this very special situation. Being aware of being alive and healthy is so important. All the other stuff helps but it is not life essentials. Many people living on tourism’s realize that if they have enough just to feed their Family and Friends - it‘s ok. I pray for you all to survive this pandemic. As a medical doctor I have to admit I have never seen more Tragic situations nor have lost more of my beloved friends and patients since WW2. May you all be blessed. Love from Vienna, Austria.

The Thailand we love so much got destroyed by the incompetent politicians. They destroyed the tourist industry and millions lost everything. Nice video though! I truly hope Thailand comes back, at least a fraction of the version we knew soon. Thai people are so lovely and carrying, they deserve better.

Have you considered that it may not be that they're incompetent but rather that they're diabolical and deceptive?
@Simon.the.Likeable
@Simon.the.Likeable 3 жыл бұрын
Two decades after 9/11, one decade after the GFC, it's not the fault of any one country's political situation. My country's tourist industry has died the same death as Thailand's and the vaccine rollout has been so much more incompetent than Thailand. However, we are not seeking to oust our government through insurrection. We are not in a strategic position like Thailand nor do we have opposition groups sponsored by the National Endowment for Democracy. Guess that's the difference.

Its creator is an amazing person too! He is the artist laureate. He had a giant dream to build a temple for King Rama 9. Because all King Rama from 1-9 had their own temple. He held it dearest to his heart, a lifelong life purpose. And he finally made it. A man of dignity. Thai people respects him.

@@JoelsTastyRide Thank you Joel for your kind words... You're absolutely right. Despite the problems we have to deal with at the moment, we still need to remind ourselves how lucky we are. Living on a beautiful island being surrounded by lush and green nature like at our home. A true oasis compared to other places out there. So I keep on being positive and I am taking my time to learn more about traditional and classic Thai cuisine. Very motivated to discover ancient Thai recipes at the moment. Tough times but still lucky to have those great opportunities... We keep on going, no worries. Hope Li and yourself are having a great time despite those circumstances. Greetings from Samui

Love that area. One of my favorite Thai trips was; going to the royal project in Fang, (Doi AngKhan,) staying overnight in a tent, going to the border 1'st thing in the morning, picking strawberries, taking a boat that left from Tha Ton, getting off at a dock 1/2 way back to Chiang Rai, riding up to a hill tribe village, going to a waterfall! (yes, all in one day!) We took the local truck from the village to Chiang Rai the next day and went to the "White Wat!"

This is literally the perfect overnight trip, tenting, waking up to pick fruit, I’m jealous of the boat I was totally unaware that this one was possible :-) I have taken a few in North Laos and South Laos, haha and Bangkok… I didn’t know that northern Thailand had any trips like this :-) that’s so cool, thank you for the reminder and of course for sharing the memory with me. @@JoelsTastyRide Yeah; if you look close at Thaton, on Google Maps you can see the boat dock. We were going to go all the way to Chiang Rai but a guy we met (with a bicycle, on the boat!) suggested we de-board with him at a dock, about 1/2 way there. I'm looking to see if I can find it. Then a ride through Tea plantations to a hill-tribe village. It was all very nice.

miss Pha Hee so much use to cycling up to the village everyday, the moutain view is fantastic and quiet of nature enjoy cycling ride each time up to the moutain. So sad everything is close now, the road is closed from my village town in maesai the most northest border road which is the first military check point(PA SAK check point) at the hill which looping all the way from mseai to every mountain of Doi Tung, Mae Salong, Doi Chang, etc. Now if any trepassing beyong of the close check point will be arrested, mostly are the burmese trying to cross over looking for jobs in Thailand. It is so difficult now even for the hill top villages with no visitors.

@@JoelsTastyRide the climp from maesai border village started at Hua Nam Rim to Pha Hee is hard but still manageable, only section of climb is hard especially1.5km before reaching the village view point at the hill top. The 1.5km section has 4 loop turns are the most hardest climb which need to pinch down handle bar for every hard paddling to keep the front wheel from lifting. However there are even steeper climb at Wat Phra That Doi Tung, it is winding of road with comtinue up & down slop upon 600~800 meters before reaching the temple. The road direction from maesai Hua Nam Rim can travel up till the first check point but beyong PHA SAK check point is still close, however the road is open from the direction at PhaMee village to PhaHee all the way to DoiDung and the rest is open. Only the section of road at PhaSak check point is not allow to pass which this is the main pass for burmese to cross over from the hill side of myanmar to maesai town.
