My original cut of my documentary Racine Grace was also 2.5 hours, Joel, because I was adamant of having it structured geographically over a whole 22-hour day, watching me and my friend Khloë go from place to place like in the Before movies. But after it was chosen to play at the Chinese Theater next month, I was inspired to quickly whip up a 96-minute abridged cut, and while it was hard to give up almost ALL of that real-time continuity, it might be my favorite feature I've ever done because of how emotionally focused it is. I took out almost all the scenes that weren't explicitly about Khloë's difficulties (and then some more than were), while praying that the casual conversations in the middle of the very long takes would give enough background info on her that the audience could see her as MORE than those struggles. My other trans filmmaker friend Violet Valentine recently said something really profound: That "every movie should have a 90-minute cut for first viewing, and a 3-hour cut for every viewing after", and I really see a lot of the truth in that. It's wonderful to live in a movie for hours, but you need to get attached to it first, almost like a romantic partner.

That’s huge about The Chinese Theater screening! Congrats! Excited to hear more about the documentary, would love to watch it. I hope you and Khloë have been well. The thought of every movie having a longer version to watch after is interesting, I know there are some movies that have both series and movie versions that could very well be watched as such. Though unless otherwise instructed, I always feel compelled to watch the “complete” version first if given the option. No matter what a rewatch of a good movie always feel fuller, even if it goes by faster. One of the many benefits of having final say over your art, no matter which version(s) wind up existing, they are all directors cuts! It’s absurd how the practice of taking final cut away from directors has made “directors cuts” a necessary thing in the first place.

Hey @joeltalksaboutmovies I just wanted you to know that I just confirmed the date of my Racine Grace screening for Sunday February 16 at 10AM. I know it's not a great time slot and you're a busy guy, but I still think this is a big win for folk filmmaking that we'd all be honored for you to attend

I'm just here to say that the scene where Patrick and Hannah are fighting outside in the mist is one of the best things I've seen in anything ever. I'd love to see how you all tackled that. It also makes me want you to make your own version of Pride and Prejudice. lol. That atmosphere you captured in it was gorgeous.

Glad you could give them a space and we got to see them! I completely destroyed the deleted scenes of my first feature film and regret it very much. Just uploaded some deleted scenes of my latest short. Even if they're not always on the same quality level as the finished project, it's still a beautiful time capsule and a sweet bonus (remembering DVD's)

I like how all the movies Joel made last year were so unique, and made in different ways. There's still a couple I have to go back and watch. I like a lot of bigtime Hollywood filmmakers too - their films are still mostly good - but after 30 or 40 years, it does start to feel like variations on a theme, like they are repeating themselves. This is why I feel fortunate to have never had much success at anything; you can just keep on making art, the way you want to make it, without having to meet people's expectations or become a slave to your own conventions.

I believe you would really like the movie Pompo: The Cinéphile. It's all about film-making, and the final part has a really touching scene about editing, and many of the things you talk about rings true in that scene. The whole movie is about the creation of a movie in a limited time, how and what the director needs to do, and I think anyone into film making will find something in it they can relate to.

Is there a reason you cut out all the scenes of people hiccuping? I kept waiting for the hiccups to come but they never did. NGL without the hiccup scene I have zero idea why you would call the film that, feels like a missed opportunity

The little side with the extra having an existential crisis is in no way confusing. That’s such a great little meta moment that’s pulled off so well. Don’t assume that your audience is dumb. We love films, man. We love this sort of shit.
