Velcro the cooler to the paddleboard. That will add stability to the "seat" but be easy to remove. Another option is a small electric trolling motor (30 pound thrust about 15 pounds) with a 50ah lithium battery (about 12 pounds). This is perfect for electric only ponds/lakes.

I would get out a carbide drill and drill 1/4" holes through two layers of steel where the pivot point is on the motor. Put a spring loaded BB tip push pin in the holes and WALA!! No more flipping the engine in reverse. When needing to lift the drive jet just pull the pin.

I think I just found my platform to build a wing in ground effect with hydrofoil. A really good start is pumping it full of helium instead of air. Party balloon helium is cheap. I also have a couple of ideas on how to use the hydrofoil as elevators and rudder while airborne. Carbon fiber is the new fiberglass. It's just as cheap and easier to use now.

Great build, I have an inflatable with an electric trolling motor. In FL keep in mind the state requires you to register your skiff/boat if you put a motor on the back. If they haven't stopped you yet, they will. My buddy got a ticket for a trolling motor on his kayak.

Aloha from Hawai'i Joe. I LOVE your idea, and what you have done with this simple paddleboard. I own a SOLO Skiff, and I love it BUT I have a bad back injury, and 4 surgeries later I have a substantial lifting limit, and my SOLO Skiff bone dry and empty weighs in at 150 pounds. My 6hp motor weighs another 60 pounds, and fuel, and safety equipment along with fishing tackle I am pushing close to 400 lbs. When I bought my SOLO Skiff 5 years ago it was $1800.00. Now they are close to double that. I almost forgot, I have to trailer this thing to a launch ramp, and pay an annual ramp use fee to the State of Hawai'i. I do allot of freediving spearfishing, so I just might have to get me one of these, and start out using it as a dive platform, and maybe add an outboard mount. I already own a 3hp Tanaka aircooled motor which would work fine when I get to that step. Mahalo nui for the inspiration.

Replacement parts are available in case you wondered, I did. I fish fresh water. I have seen videos of these motors rusting real bad from saltwater. Apparently there are steps you can take to prevent that. Enjoyed the video. I want one but can't find it online.

When I was 16 I made my own little fishing boat. I took a tube, some webbing and made a seat. Then I went fishing. This was way before they started selling them. There was no KZbin to copy from just your own ideas. I wore diving fins and caught plenty of fish. Thanks for BG ringing up those great memories.

That looks like an excellent platform for multiple uses, snorkeling, fishing or exploring remote beach areas that'd be hard to reach by land. And it looks like it'd easily hold more gear as well.

Great ideas/build! That's awesome. About the only thing I would've done differently is used furniture grade (already colored) PVC pipe for the whole motor mount frame. Furniture grade PVC comes in like a dozen different colors, including the usual pipe fittings so you could've made it in different sections to relatively match the colors on the board. Because it's made for outdoor furniture it's much more UV resistant than even painted regular PVC. You could also use "T" fittings to install rod holders, camera mounts, or even some sort of grab/leaning bar (also with rod holders) across the board. I would've also used the same furniture grade PVC for the motor mount but put thick pieces of HDPE (plastic cutting board material) for mounting the actual motor. Lightweight but super strong, no wood splinters (it is an inflatable), waterproof, already colored, etc. You could even make it so the PVC frame can be taken apart to more easily fit in a car. But otherwise...wow. That's awesome! Great job!

I built a kayak to git in the back of my car out of Styrofoam board from home depot. The outer skin is called "poor man's fiberglass". It cost me just over $100 and did it over a weekend. Super durable and unsinkable. Worth checking out

I have a great idea you might like if you felt like making it really rigid you can put a sheet of marine grade plywood underneath those two by fours cut a hole out for that middle handle and that will squeeze the plywood down to the body of your paddleboard, a little better possibly hope it works out for you, brother

One thing I was thinking is add a rudder to the motor right above the outlet. That way you have some steerage without the motor pushing. Maybe drill a small hole thru the clamp and I don't know pin the clamp so it doesn't tilt unless you take the pin out, look for a really thin locking pin. Loved the paint job, now just add the milk crate possible box and you are Kayak-ish.

Yeah puncture is always a concern. But I've fished on paddleboard and never had that problem. Also there are alot of inflatable boats on the market so it's a pretty reliable material at this point

Great video and Idea! I wouldn’t run mud and sand thru it. Like a jet ski the space between impeller and housing is a measured space for optimal performance. When this wears down from sand/mud the performance considerably drops! Try to keep it out of mud and sand. Awesome inexpensive rig that can be used for multiple uses.

Great build sir. I would place those rod holders in the orange behind my seat. Can swing them together in middle when running skinny waterways but still reach them when trolling. It would probably stay out of your way when paddling as well. Just my 2c. Great job

You need limit pins on your rod holders, you're going to lose a rod... just take the bases off, cut a slot in them, just use a table saw set to 1.5" a cut out one edge. Reinstall them with the slot facing outwards, then put the rod holder in with them in your trolling position and put a screw in so it can't turn back anymore but can turn forwards when running.

That's pretty cool. I think I'd go with a an electric trolling motor instead of a gas engine. A trolling motor is quiet and can be used while fishin'. You've got me thinking about getting one and a motor. I live in Virginia and I'd have to register it to put any kind of motor on it, but that shouldn't be too expensive. That board could be awesome around the marshes for redfish and trout. On calm days it should be okay around the bridge tunnels. But I do wonder about hooking it or poking a hole in it. And keeping gear on it might be tough. But it's so cheap I might have to try it.

Great job, this is about the coolest budget project I've seen, and it goes fishing!! The only thing I would add is a divider for the cooler. Piece of foam board and a hot glue gun, you have your dry storage on one side and the ability to use the cooler as it was meant, Ice and drinks.

As You said a great build. You mentioned a truck rack, Consider a retractable set of possibly conduit-down pullouts from the rack. set up the boat so the ramps go between and use a rope pull to pull it up onto the top. Retract the ramp, tye off, and go. this would be quick for anyone and great for us old guys. I am 84 and might even consider a small electric winch. Bill Hale

This gives me an idea... I wonder if a (largish) water pump could be used to pump water in the opposite direction that you want to travel in. And some kind of tiller handle points the output hose in that direction. For example, a 'trash pump' that does 264 gallons per minute (4.4 gallons per second) is only about $180. But it's not a boat motor... it's a water pump. I don't think water pumps require registration. I don't know about the physics of this kinda system.

Yeah, it's basically the same thing as a Jet Drive. A Jet Drive has an impeller just like a water pump. It's just that with a water pump every inch of hose or pump from the intake to the discharge creates loss of efficiency.

Dude, that thing's epic! I live in the Ocala National Forest, & am a writer/photog. for a popular fishing mag. There's over 1,000 lakes/bodies of water here within a 15-20 minute drive MAX. Some of the best ones are super deep woods, so this would be👌. The only thing I'd add would be a trolling motor (bass fishing), but tbh I use my kayak paddle 90% of the time anyway...also some sort of shade/bimini would be sweet for summer. I give the motor two months . With moderate to a lot of use . I had a plastic Coleman Johnboat back in the 80's with a Sears motor . It was fun . Used it every weekend in Tampa bay .

Awesome video. When I first saw this a few weeks ago, I thought "cool". Then this paddle board went on sale at Costco for $199-20= $180. That was a go for me. Got a cooler and fitted on there perfectly. Just waiting for a 12v trolling motor to come and I'm good to go.

I really like this setup and the price point is so affordable. Portability is obviously great. I see all of the comments offering suggestions on improvements. First gen looks pretty good though. Swivel seat on cooler mounted to the rails would be a good start? Or maybe even make it able to slide forward and backwards as you add or remove weight with a pin system? But I thought it looked pretty comfortable. Maybe you could throw a short piece of pvc pipe inside that rubber tube tiller to give it some rigidity? I'm not sure how far you can go (or would try to go) on that gas tank, but it holds such a small amount of fuel, you could always throw a little refill on there without adding hardly any weight. Looks like a blast. Thanks for posting it.

you could put a cross brace through that handle in the middle of the paddle board. That would help lock the 2x4" frame down on the paddleboard even more. Same if you angle the frame or use bungee cord ties to secure the frame to the 2 diagonal handles.

@@arthursmith5409it’s mandatory in Florida, anything that you attach a motor or engine of any type must be registered, it isn’t that hard to do, but you need to fill a few forms and be at the grace of the person attending you at the DMV, so count on a few trips there, and hope that the person that calls your number is having a good day 😂😂😂😂

I really like your paddle board and motor set up and you did a fantastic in-depth explanation. I use an inflatable kayak with an electric trolling motor and to you’re viewers, yes, you need to have any watercraft, with a motor, registered and visible hull numbers. I have been stopped twice and never had an issue with the wardens. But, make sure you know the boating rules if you operate in multiple states. Things like the kill switches, lights, whistles and vests. The wardens have a check list and they will check for everything.
