(edit - honestly, I like you and your work, buuuutt...) That vague statement at 11:55 about CIA "helping out a bit" is totally gutless. It doesn't remotely convey the influence they had or horrific acts they encouraged. You also entirely failed to mention the common thread of US / Western influence on the other dictatorships on your list... Saddam Hussain came to power as part of a Ba'athist revolution which objected to western imperialism and economic exploitation. Some of his first acts were to nationalise companies such as the Iraq Petroleum Company, which had a monopoly over the Iraqi oil market and was owned by a consortium of (predominantly British) Western oil companies which used it to strip wealth out of the country for their own profits. The Nazis came to power because of the desperate living conditions created by the extreme economic sanctions imposed following WW1. Fidel Castro's revolution was to overthrow the previous (US sponsored) dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Fulgencio Batista gained power by staging a coup of the previous democratically elected government, and then proceeded to sell off all Cuban industry and property to American companies and the mafia. The reason the economy was so bad in Chile before the US sponsored Pinochet dictatorship was again because of US sanctions. Nixon was terrified of a democratically elected socialist government that he couldn't control and so decided to over throw it before Allende even took office. The CIA director wrote "make the economy scream" in a series of notes following a meeting with Nixon. Kim Jong Un inherited his power from his grandfather, Kim Il Sung. Kim Il Sung came to power through the political machinations of the US and Soviet Union as they each vied for control over the peninsula, ultimately leading to the Korean War proxy Cold War, and Korea becoming one of the most bombed countries in history. Exactly what role the US played in the Egyptian coup of el-Sisi is still unclear, but suspected. Either way, they are perfectly happy to support him now. The situation in Venezuela is following decades of US imperialist interventions in South America, and Maduro and Chavez both presented themselves as opposition to this. If you're wanting an explanation for how and why dictators take power, look into the environment that built up to it. Look for exploitation and foreign influence forcing the general population to their knees.

Chilean here. You bet the situation was way more complicated than a short introduction can explain. Some interesting clarifications here: - The president at the time was Salvador Allende, a socialist. Yes, there was economic chaos, but not just because there was a socialist president. In a country with an almost medieval socioeconomic structure (to the point that the *Catholic Church* had started on its own a program to donate its lands to labourers so to practice some Christian social justice) the most powerful land, industry, and money owners opposed the socioeconomic reforms - with the help of the USA. Nixon didn't want ""another Cuba"" and ordered to make Chile's economy "scream." Sure it did. - Pinochet *was not* made Commander in Chief of the Army due to chaos - not exactly. In October 1970, the incumbent Commander in Chief, General René Schneider, was assassinated in an attempt to prevent Allende's inauguration. General Carlos Prats was the following in line. He was also a Secretary and VP to Allende. By August 1973, there had been already violent events involving military opposition to the government; Prats assumed responsibility/acknowledged his impotence to rein on them, and quitted his command. Pinochet was appointed in his place due to his seniority - and because up to that point he was considered reliable and apolitical. Reportedly, the other commanding generals (Navy, Air Force, Police) convinced Pinochet to join the coup they were already plotting. After the coup, General Prats fled to Argentina, where he was assassinated in September 1974. - The Chileans victimized by the dictatorship were more than 1,000. Exiled: 200,000. Tortured: 28,400. Murdered/executed: 2,123 (without a trial or martial court). This number includes: Disappeared: 1,469 (1,092 detained and disappeared; 377 executed and disappeared. 150 executed and 40 disappeared were teens and children) The numbers are inexact. Obviously. - The Chilean dictatorship had a happy ending of sorts. We defeated it with our votes. After lots of international condemnation for violations of human rights, Pinochet tried to legitimize his regime: he allowed some political activity, and in 1989 he called for a plebiscite to decide to keep him in power or to call for free elections the following year. He lost. Reportedly, he didn't want to accept the results, but the opposition had carried parallel vote counting. The other generals refused to follow him in another coup, this time directly against the people's will. He conceded. He remained as Commander in Chief of the Army for some time, and as a life-long Senator (immune to prosecution), and despite the efforts of a Spanish judge who sort of captured him in London, he was never prosecuted for his crimes. - Regarding the "line," many people, including prestigious right-wing politicians and personalities, supported Pinochet no matter what - until it was revealed that he was *also* corrupt and had increased his wealth unlawfully. Only then they retired their support. Lesson, many people care more about money than about human lives. Think about that next time you vote.

And there is some slight hint of speculation that perhaps, in some measure, maybe there was a certain North American country that assisted in the Pinochet overthrow of an administration that was making some seriously good headway in improving the lives of Chileans. Why i do believe it may possibly have been that bastion of all that is good in the world, Henry Kissinger, who stated, "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves." But i may be totally off track on this.

I am baffled at how often we talk about the political histories of Latin American countries and somehow manage to leave out the meddling done by the United States. Except that that has happened a number of times in the history of both the US and western governments. During the wars in particular. I don't entirely disagree, I just think that western societies have had some of the best living standards of all time and have had periods of suspension of civil liberties, with the liberties being restored after times of crisis. So I think it depends on both what type of freedoms are suspended and for what reasons. Vague reasons such as "protecting the country from terrorists" are much more worrying than "until we win the war". Much more worrying to me is the public distrust of government, the general lack of regard for the truth and the extreme polarization between the right and the left. Whatever government interventions there might be will likely be the result of this political climate.

we have an amendment for dealing with people who try to break the constitution
@altragКүн бұрын
Trouble with that idea is that the Bill of Rights is kind of vague in a lot of ways, and whether something is infringing on it is often in the eye of the beholder. For just one example, is a protest blocking a street and making an excessive amount of noise considered "peaceful assembly"? On one hand, you're not doing any explicit physical violence but on the other hand you are causing some level of harm to peoples' freedom of movement and peace of mind. Frequently that question is not answered as a matter of law, but as a matter of "do I agree with the slogans they're shouting?". Whether breaking up that protest counts as an infringement of the first amendment depends entirely on whether you believe "peaceful assembly" refers to only physical violence or if it includes any harm of any type. You will have your own opinion on how "peaceful assembly" should be defined of course, as well as on any of the other questions of interpretation, and you can draw your own line based on your own beliefs, but it's not so simple to make that definition apply broadly. Especially in a nation with only two viable political parties, both of whom infringe on the Bill of Rights in different ways (and occasionally in the same way - both sides want pro-Palestinian protests blocked, for example, as politicians in every corner of congress enjoy Israeli "contributions" in one form or another).

Joe, your synopsis of what led to Chile's military dictatorship is woefully inadequate and incredibly misleading. As a chilean, what you said is very, very far from the truth. The truth is that Chile, under Allende, nationalized our copper reserves at a time when the Americans were in desperate need of copper and the nationalization locked out their companies from cheap extraction. It was the CIA that backed Pinochet into overthrowing the government. They did not "help him out a bit". This was something the Americans organized and executed with the help of the Chilean military. I should not be surprised an American is glossing over something like this. Saying that "he got it into his head he could do better" or whatever tripe you passed off as the truth is incredibly insulting. You can absolutely do better, please do.

Having read it more than once, I disagree that Plato "bashes" dictatorships. Quite the opposite, he contends they are in fact the ideal form of government, but only if the dictator in question is a "philosopher king": meaning a leader who wields absolute power, but does so justly and benevolently with the necessary philosophical education to essentially always make the right decision. In point of fact, according to Plato in the Republic, the worst form of government is democracy, followed by oligarchy.

I absolutely LOVE this, because it talks about how dictatorships are a collection of things that may or may not overlap. It also describes dictatorships as a spectrum, ranging from martial law with total control for a limited time to decades long totalitarian regimes. There is a spectrum, and some dictatorships on paper look absolutely nothing like each other due to the different ways it can be done, but there's a lot of overlap of strategies. I had a teacher who felt the need to discuss the stages of genocide in her history class, so that we could identify the early stages before it gets too far, which I found INCREDIBLY informative, especially at realizing that hatred such as the Nazis were not a one time event. I think this is very similar to that unit, but for dictatorships, summarized into one video.

Never mind the fact that they were typically fighting against actual western-sponsored dictators or colonial regimes before they become leaders themselves. Types like these honestly would argue that the US or European politics has only "recently" become undemocratic, when it was never democratic to begin with, but designed to filter candidates and policies to serve corporate and colonial interest, with voting being merely the public formality it was designed to be since the 18th century.

@@Tinil0 If you are going to stretch the meaning of dictatorship to suggest that Someone like Fidel Castro is a "dictator", then you have to refer to every us president as a dictator as well. Voting in Imperialist, Colonial and Neoliberal Capitalist States of all stripes has always only been a formality, a presentation to the public of a limited range of prefiltered and acceptable candidates and policies that serve the class interest of the capitalist class, who hold dominance and influence in the economic and political fabric of society. If democracy means an expression of the consensus of the public to serve the common interest while protecting the rights of minorities, aside from early failures to protect LGBTQ rights which he later reversed, he provided just that Fidel Castro brought economic power back to the people, he redistributed the land, and restructured the economy to serve the public interest through democratic consensus building. He developed the institutional means where by minority groups of all kinds can have political power locally and nationally. This is all integral to building up socialist politics. Democracy does not mean "Voting between political parties that serve a specific class interest", it must always mean an expression of the consensus of the public to serve the common interest for all, and the abolition of any possibility for the discrimination and prejudice of minority groups.

@@lolstalgic9602 Have you ever met someone who is so nasty and mean that you can't tell if they're playing or they're serious? And then realized, "it doesn't matter, because playing or not, they're still hurting people, and I don't want this individual anywhere near me or my family?" Because that's where we are with Trump. And you're defending him.

Then you should be happy, we won. You know that most billionaires supported Harris, right? Despite the short time, she outspent Trump at least 3 to 1. And now the plan is to balance the budget and unleash an unprecedented economic boom. Plus fix education and healthcare too, which are the main reason why most Americans are poor.

Recently in Bangladesh, a female leader named Sheikh Hasina, who had been described as a dictator, resigned from her position.

You ask us to define our line, which I get, but what do we do when it gets crossed? I never thought I'd here the white house press secretary ask a private company to sensor someone on a platform, but that happened and crossed a line, but should we start a revolution over it? It gets tricky defining when and what to do once something unthinkable happens.

Vaccine mandates, shut downs, social media censoring, targeting a political opponent with federal charges that have never been used in that fashion before in a court that is known for its politically biassed rulings, pardoning someone of everything for the entire decade he had control of the family finances while publicly saying it's only for specific charges already filed even after repeatedly publicly saying no pardon would ever even be considered...
@fj8119121 сағат бұрын
Yes, we need to decide what happens when the line is crossed. My line has already been crossed... if the action matches the rhetoric. I can wait, but what to do when we cross the line?

he wasn't that bad, but Joe couldn't escape his Western prejudices. At least Che fought for the people until he died (CIA, of course). He actually refused to be in the Cuban government and went on to fight around the world. At least he remained true to his ideals.
