Maybe a lot of it is, nostalgia, but I absolutely adore this movie. A lot of people give Little Mermaid credit for saving Disney, which is deserved for the most part, but tend to ignore Oliver & Company. You can really tell how it set the stage for the Disney Renaissance. Overall, yet another awesome video. Glad to see you back and can't wait for you to dive into the Renaissance era!

Hey, good to hear from you again! First off, Happy New Year! Once again you did a great job! :D I remember watch Oliver and Company when I was younger and it gives out a modern vibe, similar to "Hey Arnold!" where despite the time period the movie is set in, it still feels timeless. This movie gave me a vague representation of New York City. It took me until I was around 9 or 10 to figure out that it was based on Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. Also, I have to note that the climax probably has the most disturbing/gruesome death scenes in an animated film, IMO. I never knew that so much went into this film! Can't wait for 'The Little Mermaid' being next, 'cause that's when it changes EVERYTHING at Disney!

This movie makes me cry in the first 10 minutes with Oliver’s intro (Huey Lewis’s song sure increases it). I’m glad that dark opening was nixed; way too upsetting for even me. The movie isn’t perfect, but for a kid friendly version of a relatively dark story it’s serviceable.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. This film's #5 on my list of favorite films, so I hold it to that high of a regard. I consider it the beginning of the Golden Age of Animation, although you can actually thank "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" for that too, and even Don Bluth's "An American Tale". I don't know if you caught my comment on your review on "The Great Mouse Detective" or not, but I'd argue the real Renaissance era started there and ended with "The Lion King" as I consider the whole line of those films, this one included, as favorites.

Ive been waiting for this review since this movie is not talked about alot in depth and man, i did not know how many small elements in this film would be major corner stones in films to come like the movies having more musical type songs and having howard ashmen on board to write songs for the films. Great video to start off the new year. Great job joe.

Happy New Year! Billy Joel, NY affluence, sharp rapid fire humor. This is the most 80s movie I've ever seen in animation. LOL And the soundtrack! Oliver is really the studio's return to stand out music. In the 60s and 70s each movie might have just one song that I found deeply memorable and stuck with me personally. Of course Disney has something of a Midas touch when it comes to dogs. ;) Wow and just like that we are on the doorstep of the Renaissance. With those being released in my lifetime, gosh the flood of memories is already pouring in!

Around 16:00 you ask what Fagin borrowed the money for. According to the Disney wiki, the script stated that Fagin is a gambling addict that lost everything after borrowing money from Sykes for a poker game. This is hinted at near the very end, when he makes a bet on a wrestling match with Winston, and fails to pay up.

I remember first, seeing that on our 14 speaker surround sound system. It was an amazing thing to hear when your entire house is wired for music, wall-to-wall, and even in the ceiling itself. So hearing the rhythm of the city threw out every corner of my house was amazing. my mom used to joke that may be building speakers that power fall into the walls of our house wasn’t the best idea because she was afraid it would bring the house down when I would watch movies like Oliver and Company

Olive and Company was released in the same year as The Land Before Time, my #1 favorite Non-Disney Animated movie. Because of this, it is hard to think of Oliver and Company without having The Land Before Time on my mind. But if I must say something good about Oliver and Company, I do like the friendship between Oliver and Jennifer. Both of these characters are voiced by real children, which always touches my heart. And I love seeing Jennifer take care of Oliver as if he was her own. And I guess I do have some sympathy for Fagin. Not only does he live in constant fear of his boss, but he actually let Oliver returning to his family be an option. True, using Oliver as a hostage is selfish on Fagin's part, but hey, better to be open for family reunions than to heartlessly forbid them, right? And besides, remembering Oliver and Company is from the same year as The Land Before Time actually makes me more open to watching this movie. But I cannot deny Georgette's selfishness makes me angry. Oliver is a poor helpless child, yet Georgette treats him like a meany? That is so not called for! So I guess I like Oliver and Company a little bit, I just don't think it holds a candle to The Land Before Time.

I would have to say this I think Oliver and Company was like Disney's Princess and the Frog at the time. It was an experiment to see if they were back on their game. The response showed that they could contend with Bluth, but they were not there yet to take his crown yet. It need an extra push so that they could finally be recognized again as the animation giant during Walts Days. It was certainly a signal that they were making a comeback and it was going to a signal of things to come.

In the original book, and in both live-action adaptations, the climax was much more realistic. Bill Sikes actually tried to keep Oliver for himself and even killed his own wife just to get what he wants, but his dog turns on him because of it, and so does Fagan and his street gang. He tries to escape from the building by using Oliver to jump from building to building, with the use of his rope, however, a quick-thinking cop shoots him down just in time, finally freeing Oliver from his awful life, and ending Bill's reign of terror.

I have actually not seen this movie yet and from everything I've seen about this movie so far from it's concept and especially with the Why Should I Worry song this looks like the kinda movie I'd really love and I plan on watching it some time in the future!

Okay so after 4 years of having written this comment I finally just watched Oliver and Company in it’s entirety for the first time. I’ll admit upon watching video again I honestly forgot I even wrote this comment years ago Anyways so my thoughts regarding this movie, despite many people calling this movie either mediocre or just okay, I actually kinda loved this movie. Now this movie does admittedly it’s flaws, like I feel the whole story is bit rushed and maybe it could have used a longer run time, and I felt the characters and their interactions and chemistry could have been better developed and better fleshed out. I really don’t know much about the original Oliver Twist story this movie is adapted from, and so I’m just judging the movie based off on what the movie itself does But in spite of my issues, this movie has a lot of things that just really wins me over, like the fact that it’s an old school hand drawn Disney animated film, with talking cats and dogs, and gangsters, set in NYC, in the 1980s, with 80s style music and culture, and has Billy Joel voicing one of the main characters. A movie with a combination of all those elements is already guaranteed to win me over. I like the movie’s story, I like the characters, and their individual quirky personalities, and how they all work off each other, I love the way this movie looks, I’ve always liked the setting and the scenery of NYC in movies, and I love the music and the songs, especially Why Should I Worry, that might be because I love a lot of 80s music and Billy Joel music, and I think the climax is awesome. I know this movie isn’t really everyone’s cup of tea, and it isn’t as beloved and iconic as most of the other animated Disney movies, and the movie does admittedly it’s issues. But I personally kinda loved it, for all the things I think it does quite well, and as a lover of hand drawn Disney animation, cats and dogs, the setting of NYC, 1980s culture and music, and Billy Joel, this is definitely the type of movie that is just really right up my alley Of all the animated Disney movies to get direct to video sequels and a TV series, I feel Oliver and Company with its world and characters actually had a lot more potential for interesting follow up stories that could have further developed and fleshed out more of the characters, compared to most of the other Disney sequels that actually did get made. I actually would have been interested to maybe see more adventures with these characters. But at the same time given Disney’s reputation with a lot of the sequels they did make, it could also be a blessing in disguise that we may have never gotten a follow up to Oliver and Company

Joe! You didn't bring up what was a real talking point around the time of its release. Oliver and Co. was notorious for violence and Sykes (and his Dobermans) died graphically like few villains in Disney films did.

So is this channel dead? I used to love watching the new videos and it’s one of the few things that my daughter doesn’t mind doing with me ( she’s 13 so that age). I mean Joe’s a great host and the videos are damn near flawless. But come on need more than one every couple of months. Especially when we’re at the renaissance which is my favorite era

Apologies for the delays, truly, though I do love hearing that you and your daughter enjoy my videos! No, this channel is not dead, just my mind these days, as I've worked all but I'd say around 4 days in these last 2 months (I work in college athletics so the transition from basketball to baseball/softball is CRAZY). But, the good news is I have just finished my next script, I have just about all of my videos and topics for the entirety of the Renaissance Era planned out and provided I can stand tomorrow (dealing with a major ankle injury because of course I am) I will probably be filming my next video tomorrow. Thanks for hanging in there and I promise, I'm going to do my best to try and pump out Renaissance videos as a more consistent pace (provided my work doesn't kill me first!)

One more thing, this film was released 22 dec 1989 in my country: the Netherlands. That's probably why I always thought it was a Disney film from the 90's. Actually? Nine days? That doesn't count in my book. Oliver & Co. is a 90's film to me. There. Done.

Two things, and I know I'm responding a year later... First thing: somehow these songs are not on Disney compilations. Maybe they felt it was too much 80's? I don't really get it. A good song is a good song. Second thing: I know New York thanks to Marvel. As simple as that. For years there is a poster with Spider-Man clearly swinging from lower Manhattan towards me on my door. Knowing NYC by osmosis. As much as people know the Millenial Falcon by osmosis, I guess. It's not that odd.

While technically not the first movie I saw in theaters (that be Bambie, but I was a baby at the time it got re-released in Theaters lol), this was the first movie I remember seeing in Theaters. I feel like I am the only one who loved Georgette too (I still do lol). Maybe it's because I was a brat myself at times lol. Needless to say this was the movie that made me an animal lover and when I started asking my family for a dog lol. I was 6 at the time. The soundtrack is one of my favs and I still know the songs "Why Should I Worry" and "Perfect is Me" by heart (and sing them when it's just me by myself lol). @12:03- *Sees the Twin towers* Darn, I can never watch a pre-9/11 movie again without getting emotional . . . . *sniffles* It's interesting how you did mention Land Before Time. My family also saw that movie and between the 2, give me this one ANY time. I have a ton of respect for Don Bleuth, but that movie scarred my childhood pretty much because of the death of Littlefoot's mother.

@@vacuumblink2300 Well, when you live through an experience like that, I made it my motto to 'never forget'. It's sad, my mom, she personally can't watch anything 9/11, but for me, it's like a compulsion to always watch 9/11 stuff every year on the anniversary. It's like I want to make sure I never forget the feelings I felt that day. It was honestly the last time I saw all of Congress and the Country truly united and it's sad it took a tragedy to do that.

This was when, as Don Bluth put it, the "sleeping giant" (Disney) started to wake up and do better films (although I never cared for this film personally). Even though The Land Before Time was basically springboarded (pretty blatantly) off of The Rite of Spring (dinosaur) section of Fantasia, I think it has better draftsmanship, better animation, and is generally a better film than Oliver & Company.
