I think you're talking about keeping tension while unrolling the film around the casette. Right? Basically, that helps so that the unwinding spool doesn't accidentally slip and just unroll itself. That shouldn't be a big risk, but if you do, you can get the fat roll scenario where the top and bottom of a 120 roll would be slightly exposed. So, just keeping one finger on the unrolling spool while moving it can keep that taunt and from accidentally unrolling more than it should.
