Great review. I just bought one yesterday with a non-functioning film counter. I reel my own film, so I rarely know in advance how many shots I get from a roll of film. In any case, I own a Leica M1, the Leica without the viewfinder. It is a great camera, especially for 50+mm viewing. I already have two 40mm M mount lenses, so my curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to buy an M2 or M3, but since I owned an M1 I felt as though I would be abandoning my favorite camera. I am one of the few that actually likes the way it loads. If you own a Rollei 35 it is similar. Once other benefit was that I own several LTM lenses work with a cheap adapter to the M mount and provides viewfinder and rangefinder capabilities. It is odd not to have a native 35mm length in the rangefinder, but I started my journey with a 40mm lens, so I like it. As you mentioned, the only real issue is 28mm which requires a separate rangefinder. My only dislike is the strap. it is an awkward and not natural feeling. My only regret is that I did not purchase it sooner. I typically carry a digital camera (Fujifilm X), a 35mm camera (TLR, rangefinder, SLR, etc.) and my backup camera, the Rollei 35 which is small and dependable. Since the Leica CL and Rollei 35 have a similar footprint, I must think hard about it.
@JTobiason15 күн бұрын
Totally agree. It's a great one and though my M6 has come back home, I can't seem to get rid of my CL. It's just nice to have an option (or sometimes I do BW in this with color in the other). And yes. The side strap is something that looks cool when it's hanging around your neck but is such a pain to actually take photos with.

I think I've done two sunset sessions up at Artist Point. One was cloudy and one was beautiful. I'd lean towards the light being a little better at sunrise (and fewer other folks out there) but it would definitely depend on timing/season/weather. Total self promotion, but email [email protected] if you want to book a session. 👍

It seems absurd that Lightroom doesn't just have a built in tool for negative conversion. 🙄 Hope they add that at some point soon. But yeah, it does suck paying them a subscription ever month, but at least if they had more tools like this built in (as long as they worked really well) it might help it be a little less painful paying the premium for it.

Have you tried just taping a small amount of leader film to the start of the roll yet? I made a few so I can prepare multiple rolls with the leader attached before I go out and shoot. I have no problem getting 23 to 24 shots per roll.
@JTobiasonАй бұрын
I haven't. Do you re-roll it back into the cassette or just leave it loose? I was considering that but hadn't tried yet.
@tubecorrАй бұрын
I roll it back in a bit so it's easier to load in the camera. Write on the film with a marker to make it really obvious it has the extra bit attached too. Also be prepared to retrieve the tongue from the cassette if you wind it all in after you shoot it. I usually listen to the camera and stop rewinding once I hear the film come off the spool. Obviously you don't want to sent it to the lab with the extra stuff on there. Avoid cutting the original film flush so it's easier to connect the extension. The lab might have issues with that. If you develop at home, I would recommend cutting the film flush then butting the extension right up to it when taping it on.. Good luck!
@JTobiasonАй бұрын
Oh. I hadn't thought about cutting flush and then butting them together. I was worried about the overlap but that makes sense. Ok. I've got to give it a try.

I'm super duper slow to begin with, even on relatively short hikes (far too many beautiful things to take pictures of and too much to appreciate along the way, while also just generally not being very fast at anything! 🤷♀️), so something of this magnitude has me a bit worried when considering it as a day hike (or, as I'd likely have to consider it, a multi-day hike without laying down 🙈😂🤪🥴🤕😬🤷♀️). Thanks for sharing it's beauty for those of us who can only dream of it for now! ♥️🥰✨ I'll get there one day (I've done Mailbox Peak -- new trail, at least, so I'm on my way 😉), but I've got some work to do.... 👣🏋️🥾⛰

I'm not an ultra runner (and am not even a runner anymore, really...though I love the saying, "If you run, you're a runner," meaning you don't have to run far or run fast to call yourself a runner), but I began hiking back in September 2023 after shedding 114 lbs from my starting weight of 322.2. I'm still on my journey to improve my health and get back to physical activities, like the running I had begun during a previous effort to lose weight. Now that I don't have so much pressure on my feet, back and other body parts, hiking (and life...including just general walking and getting around!) has become so much more pleasant and possible. While out on the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Trail, a guy I met at the trailhead, as he just finished a run while I was preparing to start my hike, asked if I'd hiked any of the PCT or, specifically, Section J. When I told him my story and said I hadn't, he strongly recommended I give it a go, which I am eager to do one day, though as a backpacking trip over several days. I loved your video and your story and, even more so, your honesty and vulnerability, which is also your strength. You are amazing and an inspiration! I am excited to watch more videos and see what else you've been up to! Thank you for this and for showing the beauty and the challenges and what pushing through yet feeling comfortable making what I imagine was the incredibly tough call to end your journey differently than you'd envisioned. The lessons you learned along the way will help you and others going forward, and you've got one hell of a story to tell, complete with epic imagery, which not a lot of folks can claim. Congratulations on this incredible feat, and thanks for sharing! Your production of this video was also top notch. 🏆✨

Hmmm... Made in the 50s, not 60s. The haze on your lens is killing sharpness and causing flare. I suggest you clean the lenses, pick up a lens hood, and learn how to adjust the rangefinder (on you tube), and I think you will have much better results. The camera sold for the equivalent of $1400 back in the day, but all of these old lenses need a shade to manage flare, which is why you see them so often when sold with a case with a little lens hood case attached.
@JTobiasonАй бұрын
I get the "use a lens hood" suggestion all the time, but I honestly think that would be a major annoyance with this camera unless it was a folding one or something. To have to put it on/take off every time I open close the camera is kinda a deal breaker. One of the best things about this little thing is it's pocketability. That is totally my personal use case and opinion. But I love it because it's so easy to open/shoot/go.
@timmeisburger3808Ай бұрын
@@JTobiason As long as the sun is not in the image, you can use your hand (or your friend) to shade the surface of the lens. With large format, we use the darkslide (which is what Ansel Adams did for his landscapes). Also, I saw someone mention you have pinholes in your bellows? If that is the case, that needs to be fixed, as each hole would act as a tiny aperture (like a pinhole camera) and form a secondary image. Probably the greatest single advance in photo technology between the 50s and the 80s was the invention of lens coatings that reduce or eliminate flare.

hi how much I need to overexposed when using 85b +2 stop ?
@JTobiason2 ай бұрын
I think the filter itself slows down the exposure by 2/3 of a stop. But, I also overexpose mine by about a bit normally as well. So I probably am shooting it somewhere around 1 1/3 - 2 stops over. That said, if you're using a camera who meters through the lens, the internal meter will do it for you (because it's metering through that filter).

I owned a 500C with a chrome C 80mm about 3 decades ago, but at some point I found I wasn't using it, and gave it to my cousin. About a decade later, I got a 2000 FC/M but there was something not right about how it cocks the mirror, and I was never able to find someone to repair it. In spite of all this, the camera had gotten under my skin, and I just kept looking for another one. I finally pulled the trigger and got a 500 C/M, and combined with the viewfinder, 2 backs and lens from the 2000, it is complete. This one I will never sell again. Now I just have to replace the M6 with 50 Summicron I used to own, and miss equally.

Thanks for sharing this. I have one too that I did not use much. My lens flared too, though not nearly as bad as yours. I narrowed mine down to early 50s with a Zuiko lens which impressed me at the time because I was an Olympus shooter then. Back then lens coatings were poor and usually only on the front element. So there was a lot of light scatter. Sadly the focus mechanism locked and am debating whether to spend for a repair worth more than the camera.
@JTobiason2 ай бұрын
That's a tough one. Honestly, if I used this camera more, I'd just crack it open and have a go at fixing it myself. Buying a new one would cost less than a repair. So see if you can do it, but then know you have that backup. Good luck!

It is quite ironic how rangefinders really are the most adapted bodies to use these filters yet nobody seems to be manufacturing them for smaller filter ring sizes - I noticed you're using a step-up ring for yours, as well. I've been using the gelatin snap-on filter from Fotoimpex but a drop of water got on it and it seemed to dissolve the orange coating on the gelatine, so I've had a big white hole in the middle of the filter. Had to take it off mid-roll while I was on a trip so all the consequent rolls are unfiltered. I'm hoping it won't be too bad once I get the films back. So my question is, how are you scanning them ? Is there an adjustment you do to manually correct the color balance, or does your software take care of it for you ?
@JTobiason2 ай бұрын
Yea. It definitely is annoying needing the step up, but my two lenses have different filter sizes. So, the step up does let me just have one filter for both. As for editing, I mostly just use auto-white balance in Lightroom before using Negative Lab Pro. It turns out ok. I use 500T a lot in my point and shoot camera, which can't use a filter. I'll be honest and sometimes it's easy to get right and sometimes it's hard to match. Not sure why.

I thought it was supposed to have that grainy look...like it's trying to have the picture quality of a disposable, but having a "modern" camera body, so that you're not polluting the environment with tons of disposable cameras. Is that not the point? I didn't think many people were buying it to take the pictures and editing them to make them look better, I just thought people were buying them for the nostalgia factor, and simplicity of not having to be distracted by the screen, but without all of the waste of the disposables. Am I missing the point?
