Thanks Joe, this was really helpful in getting a Goodwill find tuned up a bit. Adjust the ribbon lifter was so simple, in the end! I was also having issues with the ribbon fouling on the line indicator (if that's the right name) behgind the ribbon, between the ribbon and the paper. I ended up raising it a bit and that solved the fouling issue, though it does partially obscure what has been typed. All in all a win!

Indeed, when the time passes and the platen's rubber gets harder and shrinks, one has to compensate for this with a cylinder and feet adjustment. When the rubber has shrank considerably one will not be able to get a perfect imprint for both capitals and lowercase letters on the paper. A really well made machine. All basic adjustments can be made without any disassembly. I love it.

This helped so much! And thank you for also helping to make heads and tails of that repair manual--where to find the screws, etc.

Just picked up one of these babies and can’t wait to get it cleaned up and adjusted, thanks Joe!

I've just bought a Quiet riter. New to typewriters. I'm using it partly as a way of forcing myself to write without any means of distraction and partly because it's a bit of fun. My typewriter has the exact same problem, plus really needs cleaning up. Thanks for the video, I'll get the manual where you suggested and strip mine down a little, clean it up and try removing the ghosting. Wish me luck

Wonderful 👍 Thanks for showing how to use resources and make adjustments.

It’s nice that Remington has all of these lock nut/screw adjustments instead of the Royal reliance on forming little tabs. I obtained a little Remette and it is impressive the quality Remington built into a bottom end bare bones machine.

Joe just casually takes out the ESCAPEMENT and puts it back in. Yeah, ok. If I did that, 50/50 it would never work again!

The hardest part is reattaching the little spring. It really is easy.

I had two Remington Quiet-Riter's and they were mechanically and cosmetically in near perfect condition. Only thing is that I did not like the typing "feel" compared to my SMC's and Olympia's, as well as the Underwood. I sold them online locally and the buyers were very happy. Great video on the often nighmare of chasing adjustiments. Too many times people tweak things without knowing and the problems compound.

This is weird…shift motion 5.5mm best fit on the nut; trip point nut 3/16 best fit, that is between 4.5 and 5mm. I used long socket set from Harbor Freight, I found I could loosen/tighten the nut without turning the screw. The Remington is extremely easy to adjust things. It ghosts slightly if I hit a key too hard, better in 2nd gear. I could probably increase anvil slightly.

I have the escapement out of my Quiet-Riter…now I can clean, adjust and lubricate it per the manual. Then getting it back in…spring will be difficult I think.
@someonespadre11 ай бұрын
Glad I did that. The fixed dog had a lot of play in it so I adjusted it. The stepping dog had not as much play so I tightened it while making sure it is free. After I reassembled the escapement the fixed dog is resting flush with the bottom of the wheel tooth with out adjusting the stop screw…it was in the middle of the tooth before. It’s a bit of a pain getting it out and in but doable.

My Quiet Riter has a problem where the letters like to bunch up on each other. Like it doesn’t wait for the escapement to do a full trip so it will just print two letters really close together. I thought it was the escapement trip but no matter how I adjust it, I have not corrected this problem. Anyone have any advice?

Remove the escapement and check the alignments as per pages 40-43 of the manual. Be sure the dogs are clean and lightly lubed. Also, ensure the carriage rack teeth are clean. When reinstalling the escapement the meshing between pinion and rack can be adjusted, be sure it’s not too tight. Check that the carriage moves freely and doesn’t bind, and that the spring motor has adequate tension. If it piles up letters more on the right side than the left, it could be related to the carriage not moving freely or fast enough due to poor tension.

I was just given a Remington Quiet-Riter today for free by the sister of its original owner. It's been in storage for decades and is covering on mold, but it appears to be it excellent shape. I'm looking for a video on how to clean it. Do you know of any?
@Joe_VanCleave10 ай бұрын
Not specific to the Quiet-Riter, but there are a number of cleaning videos by Phoenix Typewriter where the mechanical chassis is cleaned.

I have a Remington Quiet-Riter and I was about to sit and practice with it, but the sliding part is stuck and i can't move it right to left anymore. It's just frozen in place. Anything I can do?

I had that problem. On mine the tab set finger was stuck inwards so any cleared tab stop would hit it and if it got between two cleared tabs it would click back and forth but not go anywhere. I freed the finger with PB blaster and working it. Mostly just shine a light in there and try to see what’s happening.

It just occurred to me the lock could be on…on the right side under the carriage is a lever, move it forward.
