I love that beginning music!! I wish I could have had a program of my own and used that one or one like it!! Wish I had more time than I have. Also, as you may have guessed in other programs I get more than a little enthusiastic about the whole thing. I’ve plied these halls of hobbyist typewriter repair since late 1981-almost forty years. Started when everybody thought I was plain nuts. I was in Junior High at the time. One thing I have learned since watching your program: Smart repairmen aren’t the only repairmen who can effectively fix a typewriter. Honest repairmen, caring repairmen, accountable repairmen, and repairmen who put on these programs like you do make some of the best repairmen. Maybe I watch a few of these I get better too.

P.S.: that music reminds me of the old Public Broadcasting System lineup of informative shows. “This program was brought to you in part by Tapp’s Typewriters (since 1981), and support from viewers like you.”

It changes the feel and character of a machine too. When you have a lazy escapement you can feel it. I picked up an Alpina in need of major attention. Once I made this adjustment, the last of adjustments I made, it turned the machine into a sports car. It was a great feeling.

I will have to check to see if this is the problem with mine. In all honesty, as of right now, this is my least favorite machine because mine types so horribly. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this fixes it. Thanks for the great video Joe!!

Thanks for the thorough description of the solution to this problem. Could you describe the tools (and source for) you used, the type of angled wrench and the specific type of xy socket. I'm having a hard time conjuring the necessary miniature tools to do the job (I do have a jewelers flat screw driver set, though).

Hey Joe, I need your help. Basically I bought my dream typewriter. Olympia SM3 with cursive font. Really got an amazing deal on it, and it’s cosmetically in really great shape. The problem I’m having I think is with the escapement. Basically when I press the return lever to advance the carriage to the left of the paper, it does not stop and will freely go all the way back to the right and “ding.” I notice when I hold the spacebar it will hold the carriage. If I let go, it will just roll to the right again. It’s very frustrating. I’m looking underneath to view the escapement, and it really doesn’t seem like there are any issues. I’m vaguely thinking that the spring that lies underneath the escapement (that pops it up and down to have it catch that star wheel above it) might be losing elasticity. I pulled it out, made it longer by pulling it out, then putting it back in the spot. Same issue though. I’m stumped. If you could help, I would insanely appreciate it. Big fan of the work you do. :) Signed, -Kevin K.

Clutter... I absolutely get it. I'm one of those people who are not allowed to have flat surfaces because they just collect things. Really annoying!

Is that a 3/16 Acu-Min wrench he's using?

Hey Joe can you get Kevin to explain how he used sound deadening material to quieten his royal dart in the other video ? It would be great to try quietening my typewritters to see if it helps

Is there a way to adj the key strokes after the bell? I have only three and the manual say it should be five. Thanks!

If you look in the back there is a bell trigger attached to the right margin stop…on some machines you may be able to form it so it trips earlier but things tend to be interrelated so it’s best to observe the operation to understand how it works so you don’t cause other problems. On newer machines the mechanism is behind the carriage covers so it’s harder to get to the operating parts back there.

Hey there ! I had a question in my mind for a while regarding typewriters, here it is: Can you write french characters using a qwerty keyboard (of course not directly) ? I'm not talking about the characters like "ç" that I know can't be done with anything else than an azerty typewriter, but more about "à", "é" and "è" that are far more common in french. The idea would be to type an "a" or an "e" and then get back and type ´ or ` I guess, would it works ? And for word processors maybe some of them accept the qwerty international layout, so I guess I need to find one that does if I ever want to type in french on it (or build one myself, which could be a nice project though). But it is a bit less fun than an actual typewriter in my opinion. Thanks :)

There are French, Spanish, German and other typewriters with those accent marks. But using a standard American keyboard, I supposed you could backspace then use the apostrophe (usually a shifted 8 on older manual machines).

@@Joe_VanCleave Yeah I know about that but I'm used to qwerty and I don't really know if I want to switch from qwerty to azerty everytime I use my typewriter. But I guess this is still the best solution if I want to write in french though. Anyway, thanks a lot for your answer !

One thing I LOVE about my good, old, manual ROYAL and OLYMPIA typewriters?... VERSUS these DIGITAL monstrosities... is that they NEVER, EVER rewrite my original copy! This "thing" actually "thinks" it TRULY knows what I "MEANT" to say instead of what I actually typed. Soooo FRUSTRATING!!! I prefer ANALOG over DIGITAL about 95% of the time and only use the dirty "D" when I have absolutely NO other choice. Ugh.

I know you "ENGINEER-types" just LOVE to exercise your considerable education and mechanical skills on problems like this! However? The rest of us "civilians" are generally TERRIFIED of going into the guys of our valued, precious, printing pals. We'd rather spend the care fare and a few "disks" in our spines and lug them to a qualified technician instead!
