Hi Joe X, great review as always. I've seen you break the tips off of blades that cost multiple times more than this Mora Companion. This one bent back and forth numerous times before it finally broke. It just goes to show that you can get great quality for not a ton of money. If you do "knife" things with a knife, even a rat tail tang is ok. I also just saw the short where you were almost crushed by a falling tree. Glad you're ok and thank you for these entertaining and informative videos!

That tang bend easier than expected. Would there be a difference in the heat treat sometimes.. I know you did two video's on two Mora Companion's HD stainless. One black handle, the other, orange black. They 'acted' differently also under bending stress. Black bent , orange black broke at the blade. I still favor the Mora . It's excellent. I also notice that th Mora Companion HD 3.2mm thickness, is much more resilient, resisting bending, than the regular Mora Companion, carbon 2mm thickness also stainless 2.5mm thickness. The pro Robust 3.2mm, is most resistent to bending. It being shorter helps ofcourse. In the end all knives can be fu'ed up.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Virtuovice, the Japanese youtuber who knows a lot about knives, say that companion is a really good fisher knife? I have to admit that I have used a normal Companion as a kitchen knife for about a year now. It has needed one sharpening within that time period and has microchips visible by naked eye. I really like the handle and ergos, and have had no issues cutting meat, onions and other stuff with it, about as fast as if I used a normal kitchen knife. If anyone reads this I dare you to try one out for a week, it's more handy in kitchen than one would expect. And when it's time comes, I will think it was 8 euros well spent. If I go to cook by bonfire, I prefer Ahti Leuku + Terävä Skrama instead. Ahti is a lot better at feathersticking than Mora Companion and that's why I prefer it over Companion there.

They mass-produce these by the thousands. The design is good, as is the carbon steel and construction. So, the price is very low and the value received is excellent. But if you want a knife for more heavy-duty use, look elsewhere, and spend more. There are a lot of options which are not very expensive. The Mora is so inexpensive you can almost consider it to be a throw-away knife. Buy more than one and don't worry about breaking or losing it. But it would be wise to oil the blade regularly. But don't rely on it as your only knife for use in the wild.

Cody Lundin has the Mora #1 for 33 plus years, and is still going strong. Mora is plenty . You just need to use your most important survival tool well, your brain.
@siegfriedhorner44366 ай бұрын
@@Ve-suvius There are some tasks for which the brain isn't a sufficient substitute for an appropriate knife. E.g. felling a tree (without an axe) or hollowing out a log to make a canoe. I didn't say the Mora couldn't be effective or durable. Only that there ARE better options for some tasks if you have the choice. Mr. Lundin is ONE person with a set of experiences. There are many other so-called survival specialists who recommend more of a knife than the Mora is, including those who've been on "Dual Survivial". On that show, Lundin ALSO used some custom knives and a machete; either larger or much more expensive than his Mora. But we can ask just how challenging the tasks were for a small, thin-bladed knife to have lasted 33 years? Other than "survival specialists", there are countless people from all cultures who have their own expertise developed from experiences. You might also know that traditional Puukko knives come in different sizes, and including the Leuku which is much larger than Lundin's Mora. All of those traditional knives are the product of countless generations of Scandinavian culture and actual wilderness use. In fact, it wasn't uncommon for two sizes of knives to be carried. I feel more confident in the value of such long experience; eons more than 33 years of one man's. Axes are also an essential survival tool. OF COURSE! A small Mora is no substitute. AND, wilderness survival is not the only use for which a knife can be chosen. Survival on the battlefield has, for centuries, required much larger and stronger blades than a small Puuko, even for the Finns and the Swedes. I have a few Puuko knives. But based upon MY experience and choices, I will often carry a larger and stronger knife. Because I KNOW that one tool is not the best for all tasks. Understanding that will sometimes requires the use of that concept-calculating-tool living in your skull....IF you use it.

The strength of the tang is pretty disappointing. Clearly that's a differential heat treat, leading to a weak tang. Ideally they would either change the HT to put "some" hardness in the tang or make the tang a lot thicker.
@renato36 ай бұрын
It seems that this particular Mora is heat-treated softer. In the car stabbing the tip dulled where the other Mora's did not. It would be interesting to see another companion hd doing the same test. He also did test two Companion hd stainless. The results were also different.
