You are probably one of the few human beings out of a population of 8 billion who's ever done something that is completely different and no one has ever done before. I haven't bought a knife for over 1 year and I ordered this one. It should be arriving tomorrow morning but I wanted to see how durable it was and you are the guy to do it. People make lousy comments but they don't realize the value of this type of destruction test. If I'm going to spend a few hundred dollars on a knife I want to make real sure that it will last through the worst punishment that I can throw at it. It's too bad you have to spend so much money. Cheers from Canada.

I’m not a fan of tops overpriced . Especially since they are made with 1095 steel which is cheap. I don’t understand why they don’t use a tougher steel for a chopper like 5160 or A8. Really though the price is what turns me away. Then because of steel choice the blades are way too thick for cutting. Besides if I want a real bad ass expensive knife I’d get a Busse. Just my rants another fine destruction, take care my friend.
@joex2 жыл бұрын
yeah i hear you, now i am thinking the same, a Cold Steel Machete is doing the same task, for a much much much cheaper price!!! 1095, some guys already mentioned it on my comments that this steel is not too good for a large knife, thanks for thoughts, greetings to you!!!

@@richardhenry1969 Choosing the steel is definitely important. Ontario machete's with 1095 steel , 18 inch have way more breakage than when using 1070 or 1055 steel. Looks to me that even before the TOPS El Chete broke into 3-pieces it had a bent a bit. 1095 is contains approximately 1-percent carbon making it a fairly high carbon steel. It's not supposed to bend. It's a simple carbon steel with no other alloying metals. Based on my observations it appears that TOPS is heat treating the cutting edge but not the spine which is thick and requires more energy to heat (a major expense with energy prices on the rise and easier to grind.) and temper back down to an HRC 54-55. The edge should be tempered down to 58-59 HRC. The TOPS El-chete from 4-5 years ago appears to have a better heat treat. meaning the spine was hardened to more that 52 HRC but less than 58. Based on my observations it appears that the heat treat line runs 3/4 inch above the cutting edge and the front of the knife. The remaining 2 inches above the heat treat line likely have a hardness less than 50 HRC. Only a hardness test will reveal this value. Hardened knives are not hammers. Hammers are typically made with medium carbon steel like 1045 or 1055 and can handle shock and some deformation. Hammers tend not to exceed an HRCs of 54 because toughness is needed to handle shock. Knives are supposed to snap or return to true when torque is applied to them. If they stay bent they have not been properly heat treated; especially if blades are 1/4 inch thick and 3-inches wide. Heat treatment is the heart and soul of a knife don't skimp on it. TOPS knives are not cheap.
