They really fumbled the ball with this movie. It's like whoever wrote this never watched the Sopranos. They never showed how Dickie took on a whole crew from New England. They never showed Jackie or Richie Aprile. They also never showed Bobby Baccalieri Sr. He was supposedly a big time hit man during this time. Frank Crisci and Lou "DiMaggio" Galina were some heavy hitters during this time also. WHERE ARE ALL THESE STORIES?????

Didn't David Chase write this movie? The same guy who created Sopranos, and wrote plenty of episodes too? But yeah, I agree, the movie was a fumble. I think the casting was way off, a lot of the characters don't look and feel like their Sopranos television series counterparts.

It was Chase trying to do a movie on the race riots, but the only way he could do it was shoe horning the sopranos in. So in the end, he failed to do a movie about either. It’s a bit if a plague in the movie and tv industry these days. Every once in a while, these “piggy back” movies work though, like Joker (really a Taxi Driver movie)

@@suyic2697 yeah Silvio's casting was downright cartoonish. I also didn't care for the Junior casting, or Johnny Soprano, and even Dickie Moltisanti kinda bothers me because he just looks nothing like Christopher. It had some good elements, but it woefully disappoints in many ways. It was interesting getting some background on Dickie and Johnny, and Ray Liotta turned in 2 amazing performances. On the other hand, there were too many canonical inconsistencies and almost no look into Tony's early beginnings in the Family. It just wasn't the Sopranos movie fans were expecting.

All this movie did was prove to me that though I admire David Chase and think he oversaw and helped create was is still the single greatest show to ever grace the small screen, that he is well past his prime and has no business touching The Sopranos, just leave it be for the piece of art that it is. Many Saints had a couple of bright spots that I liked but ultimately the timeline is so sloppy I just like to imagine the film doesn’t even exist as it was so poorly conceived.

@@slowjoe0485 the only thing that’s kinda interesting is seeing glimpses of young versions of characters we know and love, but they don’t play a significant role in the story at all. It’s almost like a little gimmick they added to make a link to the show, which makes sense regarding the story behind the existence of this movie. Chase wanted to make a film about the race riots in Newark during the 70s. The only way the studio was willing to finance the project was if it was gonna be a Sopranos movie, which is something he didn’t really wanted to do. We ended up with a final product that’s doing neither thing well. It’s such a shame. They could have done so much with all the fleshed-out, deep characters they had. I’d love to see a movie about the lives of young Paulie, Sylvio, and Tony, while Junior is running things. The perfect example of wasting huge potential. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, if you will. Yeah, don’t waste your time. Watch A Bronx Tale, Goodfellas, Heat, or Casino again, instead. There are way better gangster movies out there.

Didn’t even bother to watch any of the ones that came after. I will counter that the new Top Gun movie was fantastic, which proves that it can be done, but yeah, that almost never happens. I felt that the Sopranos movie had that potential, too, and seeing how beloved that show is, I figured they’d do a good job of it. If this film focused more so on Tony's mental health in school and how bad it was to the point of him following in Dickie's footsteps and befriending the guys in the store, it would have been a better opportunity to use Joey's character as an introduction to a friendship plot between Tony and Pussy and later on Jackie and Artie.

It did seem that Joey Diaz played Sal Bonpensiero in a MadTV sketch parody of The Sopranos, and had later starred in a Sopranos prequel.
