Mash does this a lot throughout the series. Including the manga which is done. It does have some series moments and really meaningful. Also lance crown, the guy you said changed was mainly the same. Mash called him out saying he lied and was not going to kill his friends. Also mash said that he had a similar goal and understood him. This causing him to regret what he did. Since he is doing this for his sister. Finding out mash had no magic he truly supports mash but still wants to have the rank so he can save his sister from the incurable magic stealing disease.
