when putting the drag back you first have to unlock it by pushing with another srewdriver behind the little wheel. Not only push the little tooothwheel back by force.😊

If the shoes catch only in a single spot then that would mean the drum is warped and catching on that place. Either the shoes should rub a little or not at all.. if you think about it, inside is totally concentric as are the shoes.. if only catching and stopping the drum suddenly than that spot will only get amplified as the brakes are pushed..

you said it should spin freely with some drag, other mechanics in other videos say that its never supposed to spin freely, it should only be movable with slight force and you should feel drag all the way around. which one is it? I have a feeling this is the chicken vs egg debate :/
@itsjustarainyday4 жыл бұрын
This is one of many. And more apples, oranges, not chicken, egg. Since they are more of a preference. Also not all brakes are created equal, some manufacturers and models are going to have different behaviors in different situations. I would be willing to guess, any one saying the brakes should be firmly pressed, are people who have had issues with breaks. The flip side of the coin, is that high pressure fluctuations over time will cause failure to seals at connections and joints. so having a low pressure system may save you a brake pad or two across the life of the vehicle, but ultimately could cause catastrophic failure, i.e. highway speeds, substantial kick to the brakes and 2 or 3 litres of dot 3 goes into your wheel well while you cruise, unhindered, towards whatever obstacle you were trying to avoid.

Hi there, did you need to bleed the brake after adjustment?
@olenaerhardt77254 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. The brake line was not open. If he would change the drum cylinder, then it would be necessary.
@themoss4 жыл бұрын
@@olenaerhardt7725 I think you are right! no need to bleed if the brake line was not opened. Do you know much about this? I changed both the brake cylinder and the brake shoe, yet, i still hear something is touching when I spin the wheel while the car is jacked up. The car failed inspection because of that.. I open the drum, adjust the brake shoe until there is a little drag. close everything, take the car for a drive then check the wheel again by spinning it by hand.. the wheel should rotate smoothly but it is not.

@@themoss I can't tell much, I started to master this activity not long ago, very new amature. I did some works, but most electrical (alternator, starter, some sensors), plus serpentine belt, oil change, that's about it. Generally speaking I'm on the stage, when I think of auto mechanics as extraterrestrials and ready to go and surrender to the auto shop any time I fail to do the job. I just started to do front brakes, got stuck on rebuilding them a bit, next will be rear brakes. So no, I didn't work on the rear drum brakes yet. But I watched many films and removed the brake hose on the front for replacement, so kind of got some idea. Recently in one film I've read a comment which stated that depending on the type of the brakes the correct rotation can be different. So the rotation might should not be smooth, some wright in comments it should rotate only when the force is applied. So I would do more research, I found it to be very useful for myself to read comments.

@@olenaerhardt7725 with a comment like this i found myself very curious.. .. a quick google search put a wide smile on me... yes, we are of the same clan obviously. Guess what? I meant to come to your work place in May haha Thank you very much for the comment. I will keep you updated. I very much enjoy doing these repairs. I recently changed the whole exhaust system, the whole of the front/rear shock absorbers, the brake pads, the brake cylinders, the front engine mount, ABS sensor.... the hardest part is to reach the right diagnosis
@olenaerhardt77254 жыл бұрын
@@themoss Sure, it would be great, pls come by. Thank you for the complements. You did just outstanding jobs, especially exhaust system, it is well beyond my physical capabilities. Shock absorbers ..., I wouldn't mess with them, because of those huge springs. Some people write the mechanisms to keep them compress fail sometimes. I enjoy car repairs when I see a positive progress. For me the hardest part is chemical (what rust remover (or converter), which grease, which theadlocker, primer, paints and so forth). Also car lifting, Saturn has a lot of points where you can place a jack and a jack stand, but we have another car Chevrolet. That one is very tricky with secure points. Yes, pls keep me updated.

They're called auto-adjusters, you don't need to adjust jack shit!

Auto adjusters on some cars are only activated when the brakes are pressed hard in reverse, so this is another form of correcting the problem while the wheel is off.

@TheOminousVoidWispers8 ай бұрын
@@ap22295 You are why I do my own work. keep the brake jobs coming in for easy money by not doing them correctly. That's how you stay in business... you know that the cylinder should not be leaking at all under the boots and if you are to lazy to grab the pocket screwdriver and peek then you are setting the customer to come back sooner for another repair (repulsed that you would consider _charging_ to do that 2 second boot check) My gfs mom was having her brakes done by someone like you, every 6 months (all 4 corners had seized caliper slide pins that were un-greased) I fixed em and she went 3 years without having her shop do em. Brake jobs are the easy money and you know it, so if you cut corners, not greasing pins or antiseizing shoe contact points, not checking to see if the cylinder needs to be replaced, you get to fix them sooner and make more easy money. I worked in a shop. I know your hustle, small shops are struggling and do it way more then big dealers that want low return rates for repairs. Not doing the job all the way and skipping easy checks to ensure that job security is how you stay in business. You even said you would charge to do that.. really? That's part of doing brakes. Making sure they are not starting to fail. Keep sending people out with uninspected brake components to stay afloat.
