It´s true! Tempura was created in Portugal and brought to Japan by Portuguese Missionaries in the 16th Century! We call it "Peixinhos da Horta" which literally means "fish from the vegetable garden" :D

If Tempura counts wouldn't ramen count as an answer as well since it was brought to Japan by Chinese immigrants around the 19th and 20th century?

Japanese people may not be the most original but once they import something they refine and perfect it to a tea, in Chinese we call it 工匠精神 or “craftsmanship”. You can see it even in traditional Japanese architecture when they absorbed lots of Chinese culture including writing, philosophy, arts, and political structure during the Nara and Heian period in the 6th century. Chinese people respect this aspect of the Japanese.

AFAIK the word 寿司/sushi is ateji(phonetic reading of kanji that usually disregards what the kanji means) so if you separate each kanji 寿/kotobuki and 司る/tsukasadoru you’ll get “longevity(long life) administer” or something which wouldn’t make sense.

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is like 90% consumed by Japan - according to NHK documentary "Japanology" on Kisaten, in 1960-1970s, Japanese beverage company, UCC bought a plantation in Jamaica Blue Mountain region, and there you go. That is the blandest, plain, coffee that just taste "bitter" and smells "generally like coffee". Airports in Tokyo (being aviation geek) - Haneda, Chofu, Tachikawa Air Base, and Iruma Air Base. Greater Tokyo will include Narita, Shimofusa (Chiba); Yokota AB, JMSDF Atsugi, Camp MCAS Kastner (Kanagawa), Iruma Air Base, Honda Airport (Saitama) - a lot of airports there.

@Kiba_a.z

The reason why sushi means sour rise is because, way back, fish used to be preserved by fermenting it in rice and from that eventually current sushi evolved.
@Mercure250
@Mercure250 Жыл бұрын
And apparently, the word comes from 酸し (sushi), which was the old form of the adjective 酸い (sui, "sour"), and it was turned into a noun (with a new way to write it, 寿司, which is an ateji, i.e. kanji used for the sound instead of the meaning) That being said, the "rice" part is nowhere to be found in the etymology, so saying it means "sour rice" is weird.

The word "sushi" is believed to mean "sour" because there is an adjective "sui" ("酸い/鮓い") in older Japanese. This adjective is not much in use anymore. However, its sentence final form (the form it takes, when it appears as the final predicate in a sentence - this form isn't in use anymore either) would be "酸し" reading "sushi". At least this is the proposed origin by many Japanese dictionaries, and what the question relates to, I guess 🤷

Based on personal experience, Google Translate is a great help! (Maps, not so much, esp for non-tourist attractions). And in most subways the staff at the control station can speak some basic English, so that's always a good place to ask for assistance. And the subway's efficient, but each company runs their own tracks, so X Line's gantries may not connect to Y Line's, sometimes you might end up having to exit to ground level and find your way there. If you're relying on the subway to get to places, remember to check if you're on the correct Line as well.
