Thank you sir! I got a 50 year old house. My garage door and my two bathrooms upstairs were without power. The breaker seemed to be ok, it did not jump. But I replaced it anyway just to get that out of the way. Still no power. I watched your video and to make the story short, I found a faulty outlet in my Down stairs bathroom ( which had the lights working and was not connected to that breaker). When I opened to outlet it was very rusty, probably from the sink’s humidity. Your video told me to check the outlets, the trick was to find out which outlet was feeding which. I replaced the bad outlet and bingo! I would have never thought that an outlet could control my entire garage and my two full bathrooms upstairs! Thanks again! You saved me a bunch of money from calling a professional.

As an electrician, I recommend not using those push-in connectors on the backs of receptacles, especially for 20 amp circuits with heavy appliance usage. Wrapping the wires on the screws is the best connection and less likely to fail over time.

Hey I have a question I changed my outlet and the breaker is on but it's still isn't working for one socket is it the fuse box ?
@JOEZEP54
@JOEZEP54 Жыл бұрын
@@diinpai Do you have a a fuse box & a breaker box? I did see this set up many years ago or did you just mix the terms up? It may be a tripped breaker, blown fuse or a break in the circuit. The non working socket may be powered from another line. Stay safe, Joe Z
@tms2568
@tms2568 Жыл бұрын
@@diinpai If you are sure that everything else in the house is working, including all receptacles, then it is likely a loose connection or splice somewhere in the circuit. Just as an FYI, it very, very rarely a problem with wiring in the walls. It is usually a connection in another outlet somewhere on the circuit (receptacle, switch, ceiling light, or other junction location). Try the closest receptacle or switch nearby as a starting point and go from there. Turn the breaker off and unscrew the device from the outlet box and look for any loose connections or loose splices. Pull on each individual wire a bit because a loose connection is not always obvious by just looking. One thing to note is that if there is more than one cable coming into the box (meaning a feed in and a feed out continuing the circuit) at the non-working receptacle then it is likely that other things on the circuit would also not be working. If it is the end of the circuit, and there is only one cable coming into the box, then that is an indication that the problem is at the outlet location that is just before it in the circuit.

Last night my power went out in our master bath. After checking breakers and trying to test everything I could think of I was at the end of my rope and had concluded I was going to have to call an electrician. I went to bed and before I went to sleep I decided to Google the issue one more time and this was the first video that came up. A trip to Harbor Frieght to get $50 in tools this morning and about an hour of investigating and I found the culprit. It was a bad connection coming off the light switch in the hall bath. Just as in this video the wire was in a push in that was worn out. Replaced the switch with a spare I had at home and everything came back on. This video probably saved me hundreds of dollars

I just had this same exact issue occur this week at my gf’s condo and was feeling pretty well stumped but once I watched your video I was convinced this was indeed her issue too, so I just skipped all the trouble shooting / tracing you did and jumped right to changing out all the outlets connected to the “problem” breaker starting at the one that seemed closest to where the issue began and turned the breaker on/off after swapping out each individual outlet until the “problem outlet” revealed itself by way of the lights coming back on to all the other outlets. Only had to swap out 2 outlets before the problem outlet revealed itself & the problem was solved, which made me look like a genius / hero to my gf :) You’re analysis was spot on and I should also note that the “problem” outlet that I found was actually a newer outlet that was installed maybe 3 years ago tops, while some other outlets in her condo (on that same breaker (and are the ones I suspected were the cause) are over 35 years old, as they’re the originals from when the place was built in the mid 80’s. I loved this video because it comes off as if your uncle or grandfather just randomly texted you a video of a problem he had at his home and is proudly showing you how he slowly and methodically resolved it, step by step. Thank you for posting. I had a problem this morning. My wife said that she got some kind of a minor shock, and then everything stopped working at that AC outlet. There's an AC outlet on the r about 2 ft away from the kitchen sink. I turned breakers off and on and pulled out my multi tester to check that circuit and other AC outlets, and I started to think that it was the AC outlet itself. But when I went to check the wires, there was no power there either. From my lack of experience, had I not seen the video you posted I would have forgotten all about the AC outlet that is hidden in the spice cabinet, which is also about 2 ft away from the sink. Unlike the one on the right, it has a breaker to satisfy the code laws. I went to examine that breaker more closely and found that it did, in fact, trip. I pushed the red button and wala, the other outlet came alive. You learn something new every day and thank God for KZbin.

Joe, The reason that the dining room receptacle went first is because it is the first device on the circuit and caries all of the load from all those 4 receptacles. So, it builds up the most heat. I would strongly suggest that you get another circuit run and receptacle for the microwave. It is suggested by the microwave manufacturers that you have a dedicated circuit for it. Best wishes, Kevin

Some licensed electricians aren't electricians. The people who should know better do the shoddiest work. I was replacing some builder switches with dimmers for a friend who had his dream home built on the Connecticut shore. Couldn't believe the disasters I encountered. A foot of cable protruding into double ganged boxes with three inches of the cable jacket not removed. Some switches had been wired using two of the push-in terminals and the third wire was just pushed in under the back wire clamping plate under the screw terminal. To make room for the dimmers had to undo all the wire nuts, label the wires, remove the wire jackets so only a half inch showed,. Should've called the local building inspector and ask how this got by him.

@@JOEZEP54 So we use type C and F outlets here and I'm sorry, but I don't know if the wiring is different for those or not. My problem is actually with just one outlet and I haven't checked it before I commented, but the problem is just that one of the two wires broke off of the outlet, bc it was already hanging out of the wall when I started using it. I might be able to reinsert it and use it again. I always search everything in English, bc most of the time it's much more helpful, so this was kind of a reflex search. 😅 Thanks and you stay safe too!

Thank you for getting back to me. I am not an electrician bur very curious how different systems work. From what I was able to find out it looks like type C and F outlets are wired the same as here in the States. From what you described it sounds like you should be able to reinsert the wires. I would trim them back a bit to get a fresh wire connection. Stay safe, Joe Z

Very thankful for this video! I am the maintenance man for the complex I live in, and I'm not an electrician. Have been dealing with the very similar situation, where half of the house didn't have power throughout. Fixed all but three, that were in one room; as the other half of the room had power. So I'm thinking the GFCI outlet in the hallway bathroom is the one powering those last three outlets. Thanks again for taking time to make this video.

Very thorough explanation in diagnosing the cause of the problem. Whenever there’s 2 sets of wires (4 wires total - excluding the the grounds) coming in to a box, it’s preferable to pigtail them together, thus preventing other receptacles downstream from tripping or malfunctioning. Another suggestion is to install a GFCI in the your dinning room that will also protect your downstream outlets in your kitchen. Pigtails: I do acknowledge this is not always possible in older homes where smaller metal electrical boxes was the norm back in the day, because there isn’t enough space in these older boxes to accommodate wire nuts or wago’s. Again , very good video and thank you for sharing.

Nice video and step-by-step instruction. Never “back stab” an outlet nor switch with electrical wires as they cause these electrical problems years later. Always “pig tail the 2 wires originally going to the device and add the 3rd to the connection and the other end should go to the device. You will never have multiple device failure again! When the original electrician wired my house 16 years ago he “back stabbed” ever device and so far 3 devices have cracked open at the wire entering the device. While “back stabbing” is permitted, it is a poor way of wiring a device and only causing problems years later!

This literally just happened to me. I rewired one of my outlets... the bottom one was on a switch. Disconnected the switch, rewired it disconnect the switch and stay on. Things went well... turned on the breaker. Overhead lights work, tested too outlet... it worked. Tested bottom outlet, and accidently hit the gfci test button (on non gfci outlets) and now all the outlets in the whole chain are dead. I suspet I blew up an outlet further up the chain as the breaker still works, my overhead light works... but now all the outlets in the chain are dead..and they wired em up by stabbin them in and out instead of puttin a lead to em. So now I have to track down this chain until I find the first broken outlet to fix it. A gfci test button isnt suppose to killyour outlets, but it must have!

I believe this is exactly what is going on in my house, the outlets in the master bedroom (above the living room) and the living room are all not working, but they work in the dining room next to the living room which is on the same breaker. The breakers are all in the on position and have been switched on and off multiple times in testing. The box has no lose breakers and the outlets are quite old, around 50 years old in some parts of the house so they really needed replacing. I will be replacing 9 outlets in total so that each of the affected and the one previous in line to the affected will all be brand new and hopefully restores the power in that area. Though for me it's hit the lighting on the same circuit, the lights won't turn on either... so who knows for sure until I replace the sockets if that was the case or if the wiring itself will need replacement. This isn't my house, but the company that manages it doesn't do repairs... I've had to do them all myself after YEARS of waiting which is appalling, but when I do it myself it is done fast and I take all the precautions to do it right. Thank you for your video, and I appreciate you prefacing that you aren't an electrician and also reconfirming it again at the end, you did a lot of good work yourself for not being further educated specifically in that trade.

Two things: 1. 1960's code and practices would run an outlet/receptacle circuit from one room into another so that in case of a short/open-circuit, you had at least one hot outlet in the room. 2. Great tutorial. I have a similar issue only a little different. I had a breaker that kept blowing after several power outages. It had a 15 amp breaker, unplugged everything in the bedroom that kept blowing the breaker, turned it back on, blew a new 15 amp breaker I installed. Only then I noticed all the other breakers had 20 amp breakers. I replaced the 15 amp with a 20 amp and everything stayed on. Only now, I have lost power to another room. All breakers are on but lost power to one outlet in the bedroom and the switch plate in the master bed bathroom. We have heard critters in the attic and I’m wondering if one chewed through a wire and when I put the 20 amp in, it was the final straw. Looks like it’s time to buy an audio tracer. Thanks for the tips!

@@JOEZEP54 I found the problem. The outlet that the HP laser printer which pulled 6A was plugged into was actually ok. It was daisy chained to the next outlet, two other outlets and the light switch for the room in the next room on one side of the room. The hot side which had three hot wires melted the wire nut for some reason. I pulled all the wires out cleaned it up and used WAGOS instead of wire nuts. Then I replaced the outlet.

@@rlg222 Glad you were able to find the issue. I would look into why that wire nut melted just to be safe.

I live in an upstairs apartment and I was using a space heater in the bathroom and it quit working along with the light by the sink but the other light above the tub still works. I checked the outlet on the opposite side of the wall (in my bedroom where I do my hair) and it worked. Just curious if this is something I should report to my landlord because there’s also an outlet by my kitchen sink that doesn’t work which didn’t work when I moved in here. Great video Joe, I learned a lot.

Teresa, I am glad this was of some help & thank you for your support. Teresa please keep in mind I am not an attorney & am not giving legal advice. That said I would contact the landlord, I believe this is an landlord issue to be taken care of. Plus there could be a loose or broken wire that should be taken care of for safety reasons. Your landlord should not be upset with you if that is your concern & would want to know if there were any safety issues, again that is my opinion. Let me know how you make out with this. Stay safe, Joe Z

Thanks for sharing this. The part where you said you called your electrician friend and told you about other GFI in the house helped a lot

Great tips on isolating the problem outlet. The challenge is that I am not able to determine which breaker the 4 outlets that are not working are on. To be safe, I will kill the master breaker to be sure that there is no power to the outlets that I suspect are faulty.
