A powerful instrument in particular for its splendid bass. The pedal solo in the toccata is a masterwork of rendering. An outstanding interpretation, taking advantage of all the tones of the orgel. Warm cingratulations !!!!

A wonderful and inspiring performance of this work, so much finer than the overexposed Toccata and Fugue BWV 565. It's always fascinating to watch Katya Sager's hawk-like concentration. But I wish we had been able to watch more of it. There is no camera for the dance of her purple shoes as she plays the bravura pedal passage soon after the beginning of the Toccata. And during the Fugue we spend far too much time looking at the Grossmünster organ case, an impressive structure but not a beautiful one. I'd have preferred a still camera showing the organist from top to toe as she confronts this mentally and physically challenging masterpiece.

Fabulous. Tremendous. Excellent performance! So many play Bach poorly. This is great. By the way, I played this organ in 1969 when it was new and the builder was still voicing it. ;-) Fantastic instrument.

S.D.G.=soli deo gloria. J.A.=Jesus adjuvat.

Was soll das heißen?

Sorry for my bad English. Dear Katja. You play the pedal solo like many others - like a little piece of music. But the solo is sport, not music. Bach composed this Toccata when he was young, he want ed to show everyone his technical skills. Therefore he played the solo very fast. Don't you believe me? Well, then I want you to answer my question: Why don't we never find any pedalsoli in his later organworks?

Intentional fallacy. Did Bach tell you this, or are you assuming that you know what he was thinking when he wrote this?
@danielschechter8130

I disagree. The performance speaks for itself. Sager's performance is impeccable. There are numerous theories about how Bach's music "should" be performed, but music is a collaborative effort between the composer and the performer, and Sager's interpretations are the best I've ever heard. My only criticism is that in this video we don't get to see her playing the fugue, as the camera shows us nothing but the pipes and the score for most of it.

micheal49, «Bach told me?» Yes, but not only me, but everyone who reads sheet music and who has some knowlegde as well. We read and understand what the author says. Just like that with sheet music too - we read the notes and understand what the composer thinks. What knowlegde is needed? In Germany, the pedal claviatur was more developed than in many other countries. In England, they didn’t have pedals at all! The young and ambitious Bach wanted with such pedal solos to show what he could perform with his feet, melodic lines that were not possible in many other countries. But some melody lines in the pedal were impossible to play even for Bach, when the pace was fast. (part 1)
@geiryvindeskeland7208
@geiryvindeskeland7208 3 жыл бұрын
So what did Bach have to do when he wanted to play fast with his feet? Yes, he had to construct the melody lines in the pedal. So he couldn’t choose the most beautiful melody, but a melody line he knew was possible to play quickly. That’s why the pedal solos got the melody lines they got. In several of the organ fugues, he had to simplify the fugue subject in the pedal otherwise it would not have been possible to play it quickly. But in some fugues he wanted to keep the fugue subject unchanged also in the pedal, but with rapid tempi he had to construct the subject’s melidy line. Such organ fugues are BWV 532; 543 and 564; etc.

Fabulous music. Brilliantly played. Sager is my new favorite organist. I'm giving this video a thumbs down because it spends the entire fugue showing us the goddamned pipes. I don't want to look at the goddamned pipes for the entire fugue. I want to see her play the instrument. The pipes don't change. A three-second shot of them would be plenty. I cannot stand having to look at those stupid pipes when the video could have been showing us Sager's hands and/or feet on the keyboard. I am fascinated watching a great organist play. The way they can make their fingers and feet work the keyboards. And then some idiot producer decides to show us still shots of the pipes!!!! Five thumbs down for the idiot producer who decided we'd rather watch still pictures of the pipes instead of the organist's hands throughout practically the entire fugue.
