He's the symbol of a revolution: football used to be static, defenders defended and attackers attacked. Then came the Ajax Amsterdam and Netherlands team which played a total football: all the players were at the same time athletic and technical, so they could be in a perpetual movement, passing the ball and driving crazy the opponents. Cruyff was the conductor of those teams, he could play anywhere on the field, could break a defense with a dribble or with a pass and score goals. FC Barcelona's tiki taka is Cruyff's legacy.

In the 70's he was arguably one the best for sure. He revolutionized football and changed the way the Netherlands, Ajax and Barcelona played. Nowadays most top teams try to use his approach to the game. Which is controlling football based on ball posession and movement, where every player can play in most positions and having the focus on the development of youth players instead of buying players. I'm Dutch, he is easily our biggest sports star in history and is considered as one of the greatest Dutchmen in general aswell.

Both since 2008 have been the greatest of their generation. They both been breaking records, both score more than 40 goals every season. I'm not saying those names you mentioned are not up there. Those were just a few players I had on the top of my head when I wrote that. Saying they haven't earn that place yet is beyond me. Even some legends put them up there.

Telmo Esteves Neither of them have retired yet which is the only time you can really talk about them being in the Greatest of All Time category. I'd say Messi could be ranked up there although I think he's yet to deliver on the international stage. Ronaldo is too inconsistent and again hasn't done much internationally. Most importantly neither can be considered the greatest of all time as they haven't changed the game like players like Cruyff, Pele, Moore and Beckenbaur did. Also, it's a lot easier to break records now due to the sheer volume of games footballers get compared to in the past not to mention the science that gives them longer playing careers. Greatest of their generation...yes. Of all time? Nowhere near.

Finn Murphy Zico scored over 30 goals in a season 5 times during the 70s (and the Brazilian league had a defensive record second only to Serie A in that era). He scored 40 or more goals in a season twice (including 65 goals in '79!). He was as good a dribbler as Cruyff, more skillful, had even better technique, was one of the 2 best playmakers in the history of the game, one of the best free kick takers ever (top 5 without question). Simply a better player (and make no mistake I hold Cruyff in the highest regard as a player). Sure Cruyff is generally considered the best player of the 70s but that's only because Zico is criminally underrated in Europe. And the team tactics that the Ajax Amsterdam and Netherlands national side he played for were unquestionably revolutionary, with his skill in possession and at passing being a key part of that. What the video doesn't show (or only shows a little of) is the way teams tried to stop him playing. I'm frankly astonished that his legs weren't broken more than once, because trying to kick him off the park was hardly a rare option. Like most of the great players, he was really tough physically.

The footage at the end of the video is from the first proffesional soccer league in the USA, Cruyff played for Los Angeles Aztecs in 1979 and the 2 next seasons for the Washington Diplomats... all these teams doesn't exist anymore, neither the league. Cruijff is a legend more than any other player in football history probably, because he inspired a totally new way of playing football, something which you still see in Barcelona and similar teams today. Yes, Pele, Maradona, Lineker, Bergkamp, Messi, Ronaldo, all fantastic players in their own right. But none of them really had such an influence as Cruijff on football even till today. As someone else said in comments, he is probably the teacher/inspiration of the one who taught Messi to play. Besides this, Cruijff also did a mountain of charity work with his foundation, something not even shown in your video. I can't think of anyone on par with him even today in global football.

Ramdani Badreddine Midfielders can be classed as attacking payers too. All the players you listed were attacking midfielders. No Keane, Viera, Rijkaard, Davids, Matthaus, etc.Defenders who are better in their position than the attackers you mentioned in theirs? Johan Cruyff is a legend ! He was technically a fantastic player, and stategically THE MASTER. He changed the way coaches organize their strategy [ "total football" ], the kind of players they choose to do it, and necessarily the way kids are trained to become prefessionnal footballers, for instance in Barcelona, where a kid like Messi learned to play by HIS rules. That being said, of coarse, Messi is an extraordinary player, but he plays in a team with a specific organization, and a fantastic ball possession, which allows Messi (or Ronaldinho...) to have access to the ball in very good conditions. RIP Johann !

When Cruyff was chosen Europe’s best player of the 20th century, German Franz Beckenbauer was chosen second best. Beckenbauer’s reaction was: “It’s a great honor to be second to Johan”. Garrincha, Pelé, Maradona, Messi: all outstanding individualists. Cruyff was the total footballer and coach in the field. He dictated the game! As a trainer, he made Barcelona what it is today. Johan is dead, but The Johan Cruyff Foundation lives on. The way the scored penalty is legal, but the problem that if you do this all the time, defenders very likely will be first on the ball and clear it. So, its a kind of trick they invented, got defenders by surprise. So it is very smart, but it will not work most of the time, and thats why this was beautifly done.

Not a criticism on you but the bad thing people are doing is they are putting together videos with artsy vids and music instead of showing the plays with announcers commentary as they happen. The person putting the video together is trying to be the star and to those who know the players know these are bad representations of these athletes. I stop watching when there is a music soundtrack
