Out of a total of twelve flute sonatas composed by Johan Helmich Roman and published in 1727, six sonatas (C minor, B minor, A major, C major, G minor and #12 in D major) are great, and further two or three sonates are somewhat okay-ish. The rest of them - on the other hand - are uncomfortably challenging to play, because the material used by Roman in those sonatas isn't really that inspiring. And, in my opinion, this sonate in G major sadly falls under the last category. However - The decision, made by the performers to NOT use a harpsichord during their performance is a brilliant choice, because the intimacy of the scoring helps this music reach the finishing line, without making the listener too much aware that this is probably not Roman at his best. Bravo!

I have all twelve flute sonatas on CD and enjoy them all equally, I agree with the use of the softer toned theorbo over the harpsichord, it does draw you more into what the flute is saying.

Agree, the music does not rise to greatness, but in a good live performance we still think it is worthwhile...

Is Sonata 5 in E minor "somewhat okay-ish" or not "that inspiring"? It seems to me a quite remarkable piece, and Jed Wentz with Musica ad Rhenum makes a strong case for it, as do Flauguissimo Duo (on You Tube).

@@grahamsmith2862 I think it's a wonderful example of the Baroque suite in a way. The slow movement has a sort of Bachian emotion to it.

Roman’s music is new to me (I confess and regret my ignorance). If this is “not Roman at his best” I have high hopes for what I can expect.
