This suite is one of the possibly 6 we have which Marais composed pour le couchet du roi, i.e. for the evening time as the king was being prepared to retire for the night. This task was one of the less desirable of the kinds of work musicians had to do at Louis' court, which may account for this music being less widely known than Marais' lucrative books of music for viol. To fully understand Marais' life at court, the performance here needs to have that bit of information available.
