Sculptor and draftsman Johann Gottfried Schadow, born in Berlin in 1764, left school at age 13 to take drawing lessons and begin training as a sculptor.
After returning from a two-year stay in Italy, a meteoric rise followed in Berlin. At the age of 24 he already became one of the 5 rectors of the Academy of Arts, head of the court sculpture workshop and director of sculptures at the Oberhofbauamt.
After creating his three main works - the tomb for the illegitimate son of King Frederick II, the group of princesses and the quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate - he is the most famous artist in Prussia around 1800.
He attracts many talented students, such as Christian Daniel Rauch, and becomes the "father of the Berlin school of sculpture."
He was enormously productive, and some 400 sculptural works and 2300 drawings by him are still extant today.
In 1850 he dies in Berlin at the age of 85, having written his memoirs the year before.
Until February 19, 2023, there is a special exhibition on his work in the Alte Nationalgalerie that is well worth seeing:
