I don't believe that these are for Resonance. Sympathetic strings are often smaller and affixed to the body. My teacher had a guitar with one Low B string attached in the same way which was used to set a lower bass note in the key of the piece. I'm assuming she went all out with 2 bass notes, tonic and dominant would be handy in for pieces transcribed from piano.

In the time of this romantic music, extra bass strings were very much the "popular" thing. They were used to play the music of Sor and Coste, (guitarist composers themselves) until their popularity swelled around the time of Regondi and Mertz. They used the extra bass strings in their compositions a lot, (also guitarist composers) and it wouldn't be possible to play this music in the original sound without using them
