I sang this Requiem after my mom died. It was both emotional and cathartic at the same time. This version is absolutely spiritual and beautiful. I come back to this over and over again. It is balm for my soul.

I was in college when Martin Luther King was killed. At the time, we were in final rehearsals to do this for our spring performance at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. We ended up doing it as a tribute to Dr. King. I was in high school, college and community choirs for many years, but never took part in a performance with more emotion than this one.

Stunning performance. The interpretation, phrasing, dynamics, balance--everything is perfect. To say it is a "musical" performance is a gross understatement. It has a spiritual quality that speaks through the genius of Brahms (and Blomstedt) to every listener. It surpasses even Bruno Walter's version from the mid 20th century in my humble opinion. I must have listened to this 20 plus times and it moves me every time. Often to tears.

Many, including myself, regard Blomstedt's CD of this work as sublime. However, this video recording with the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir is now top of my list. Camilla Tilling has never been so well caught in flight and Blomstedt gently draws from the orchestra and choir a profound understanding of the complete work.

What an extraordinary performance. Blomstedt understands Brahms like very few other conductors do. And Camilla Tilling sings with such passion. I have loved her version of "Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit" since I first heard her with Grete Pedersen and the Norwegian Soloists' Choir, the Ensemble Allegria and the Norwegian Wind Ensemble.

It seems like the audience liked it. Brahms quite often ran things by his friends such as Joachim and Clara. In this case his friends advised him not to have that fugue at the end of the third movement, but he kept it anyway. And now it is one of people's favorite parts.
