Sweelinck's hexachord fantasia played by Johannes Keller on his Ruckers double in original disposition. The instrument is a copy of the Edinburgh Ruckers 1638, made by Matthias Griewisch in 2016, artwork by Christian Scheuber. Registration: 12'+6'.

Easily the finest Ruckers copy in existence. Tonally magnificent, and the appearance is 'bang on', including the appearnce of the keyboards - absolutely matching extant contemporary paintings. As for the music and performance, what can I say? I can add nothing except that this is nine minutes of sheer perfection. Thank you for making a few minutes of Lockdown bearable :-)

I agree with Andy: magnificent, spacious and impressive playing and sound. I met MG at Brugge in 2010 and was amazed by the work. Significantly advances our understanding of the misunderstood Ruckers doubles of this time. I want one! The extra freedom imparted to the soundboard through the lower tension creates an extraordinary resonance - it sounds like 6 sets of strings are playing, but with total focus and clarity..

This utterly MAGNIFICENT, Johannes - congratulations and thank you for such a fine interpretation, and kudos to Matthias for such a splendid instrument too! Could I please ask you to make a recording of Byrd's "The Battel" sequence on this harpsichord? That group of pieces, played by Christopher Hogwood on a Derek Adlam muselaar were the catalyst for my love affair with harpsichords when I was 13, some 31 years ago, and the passion has never diminished. Kindest greetings from Australia 🙂

What tuning system was used for this performance? It’s definitely not equal temperament because some of the intervals sound very pure and some of the others sound worse than equal temperament. It’s a great performance regardless.
@JohannesKellerCembalo
@JohannesKellerCembalo Жыл бұрын
I use some sort of meantone temperament, more or less based on fifths that are smaller than pure by a quarter of a syntonic comma. That leads to very consonant major and minor thirds compared to equal temperament. The fifths are more narrow than in equal temperament. Because the thirds are pure or very close to pure, the black keys can only be used as either sharps or flats, not both at the same time. I like this temperament a lot for this instrument and this music, it not only encourages a rich and dense feeling or resonance and harmony, but also supports the transparency of the polyphony.

It's some kind of meantone, probably close to 1/4-comma, with mild adaptations. I don't remember exactly, but the sharp keys are probably a bit lower than regular 1/4-comma-meantone.

@oliversvensson1231
@oliversvensson1231 Жыл бұрын
It's called a gamut. It's the most commonly used musical notes represented on a table. When it came to reading notes/music, there was a series of 6 notes called a hexachord - since there are obviously more than just 6 notes, there were three hexachords (Starting on any F, C, and G (this piece only uses the ones that starts on F, and C) to cover the most common notes. This whole thing gives us the notes c d e f g a bb and h. If we want to have other pitches you use "musica ficta".

@JohannesKellerCembalo
@JohannesKellerCembalo 4 жыл бұрын
