I live in America in Illinois Minimum wage is 11 dollars per hour except for servers (waitresses) their wage is 6.60 per hour that is completely wrong in my view so I almost always tip.. I am 57 years old I could count on one hand where I did not tip and that was because of bad service, many of the waitresses are single women with children, I have not seen any male servers in our area.. What I don't like is some restaurants require tip sharing. everyone is trying to make their own way in this world why should servers be punished. who knows your server could be the next congress women or man

I was on a 4 yard for 3 yrs and went to the chow hall for lunch like any other day. But this day, a cocky Sgt decided to sit in the ABs shot callers spot that everyone on the yard knew not to go near. Silence fell quickly as we all lined up for our trays. Nobody was eating, just watching, waiting. Sure enough a youngster smashed the Sgts face with his hard plastic tray and all hell broke loose. I was literally walking out when this happened so I didn't catch a beat down for not participating. The C.O. in the tower did make us all hit the dirt right outside the chowhall while pointing his AR15 directly at us. What's strange is I felt no fear. I wasn't a tough guy in prison, played alot of basketball and was a teachers aid. But to this day if that CO had decided to open fire, I may not be here. What's strange is that part of my life seems like someone else's. I did a full 5.2 yrs and I do have the occasional nightmare but other than that, it's as if it didn't happen. Strange.

1:36:42 the only thing I have issue with so far I love John abbots podcasts but this one thing I think isn’t the same is his experience compared to a soldier Soldiers are going to countries with different cultures and seeing the most horrendous acts for example Craig Harrison who I support whole heartedly has chronic PTSD and flashbacks has killed people because he was ordered to or through the defence of his guys on the ground, been blown up and shot in the helmet causing head trauma. He’s lifted babys out of skips that have died. He’s seen the back of his friends head come out and tried to hold his head together knowing he’s gone. You cannot compare that to shootouts with police in your own city/state or stabbings in a prison. They’re very bad experiences but to compare yourself to a soldiers experiences isn’t right at all

Fear: I was afraid of heights. I was an actress and had to do a play where I was a 12 year old girl and I had to climb a 25 foot ladder in the dark and give a speech. I realizad that the 12 year old girl wasn’t afraid of heights. I charged up that ladder every performance because I wasn’t “me” - I was that girl. I’m no longer afraid of heights.

Tips: Agree with John on the creepy attitude of waiters and waitresses. The problem in the States is the dominance of chain restaurants where food is awful reheated boil in the bag mush, and no amount of service is going to make that a pleasurable experience. As far as service in the UK is concerned, it’s shocking. Utterly dreadful. The reason for that is the complete lack of training and the very low wages and poor calibre of staff.
