John Donne's Catholic guilt provides the words for Oppenheimer's atomic guilt. You can't beat John Donne's sacred poetry.

Donne's poem speaks not of guilt, but of doubt. "Use force to make me believe in You," he says, "for up until now, you've only tried to convince me gently, but reason won't allow me to believe in You. By Your law, my doubt means I belong to Satan, and I'm going to Hell unless you take me from him, make me Your slave and rape my mind - only thus can I be free or chaste." By addressing the poem to God, Donne shows that he does believe, but what he's begging for is overwhelming, irrefutable evidence that will set him free from doubt.
