The two biggest moments in Australian soccer history happened in this shootout. Mark Schwarzer's second save and Aloisi's goal.

I remember it like yesterday (same as Timmy's goal against Japan). Life changing.
@trentbell59316 жыл бұрын
moneyatslander why? Who cares about John Aloisi’s goal, they didn’t win the World Cup, in fact they didn’t get anywhere near winning it. It’s the same with that goal against Japan, you say life changing, I say who cares. Who are Japan anyway, as if they even rate in International soccer.

Totally agree . The womens 20 penalty kicks was more nail biting but nothing beats seeing Aloisi rip his shirt off and sprint like crazy after more than 30 years of missing out on the World Cup . 👍👍👍👍👍

This was a night Australia buried the demons on not closing the deal in the 2nd leg. To realize the importance of the moment for that nation, you have to go back to the times they were on the doorstep only to have their hearts ripped out in the 2nd leg: 1993 v Argentina 🇦🇷: After getting a 1-1 tie in Melbourne in the 1st leg, having to travel down to Buenos Aires for the 2nd leg, the late, great Maradona was not going to let that team lose. After Winning the cup in 86 and going to the final game in 1990, that Argentine team had the experience in big moments and it showed that night with them winning 1-0 and sending the Aussies home. 1997 v Iran 🇮🇷: After tying 1-1 in Tehran, they go home for the 2nd leg in Melbourne and are up 2-0 with about 18+ minutes left and it all fell apart, Iran scores twice and gets a 2-2 tie and the Iranians end up going to France. 2001 v Uruguay 🇺🇾: after winning 1-0 in Melbourne in the 1st leg, going to Montevideo for the 2nd leg, all they needed was one away goal to advance. Instead, they get smoked 3-0 and the Uruguayans go to Japan/South Korea and the Aussies once again go home. That’s what makes that night in Sydney all the sweeter for the Australians because it buried those demons.
