Are you surprised? John Barry had a movietone sound all his own; no wonder he did all those James Bond soundtracks!

John Barry was a huge compositional talent able to switch from one style/genre of TV & film to another, whilst still holding onto his identity- ‘his sound’ in the soundtracks he created. 🎼🎵🎶🎵💛😊

One of my favorite soundtracks. You just can't go wrong with heavy bass, tuba, bass trombones, bassoons and a blaster beam. Whoever was playing tuba in this studio orchestra was epic.

The score was easily the best part of it. It just built that eerie, foreboding atmosphere throughout the film.

Fantastic!!! I was 8 1/2 when this came. I was standing in line with my father. Star Trek was also playing. The critics failed to understand how powerful it was. The scenic desighn alone. The doorways, passageways all unique i dont know of a single sci fi film that has ever repeted the look. My thinking is alien probably took most people away from this film because it was unique, mixing horror with scifi. The black hole was a wonderful part of my childhood and always will be😂

The "black hole" theme Barry developed is interesting. It sounds like the orchestra is trying to develop a motiv, but its weighed down by gravity, so its short, sharp and it keeps trying to restart but it keeps getting pulled down. Everything is pulled down to the center, and the notes are dissonant as it cant hit the key specified. lots of accidentals. interesting.

Is the "blaster beam" that xylophone-sounding instrument? Because if so, I can see why people are talking about Star Trek, as I do remember hearing this sound somewhere in Trek. Edit: actually, I think it's this rumbling metal tube sound. For what it's worth, they're both percussive sounds, so they could be one and the same. Wonder why the hell they called it the "blaster beam", though, other than it being so unorthodox it's memorable.

Why would anyone digitally remaster a sound track that was originally mastered digitally? The Black Hole" was the first film to have a digitally mastered soundtrack!

Because early digital processors had lots of audible faults and upsampling the original multitrack to a higher bit rate and remixing it with modern gear can improve things significantly.

It had good actors in a so so movie. Parts of it are real creepy....then it goes astray. Had an almost Forbidden Planet feel at first and loved it. Imagine instead if it was redone NOW with a serious tone and GOOD actors, still. They remake movies that are fucking perfect like "The Crow" and then DON'T remake ones that could maybe use the ideas. Hollywood....beh

While I can see why you would think so, there are glaring mistakes in the science, etc etc, the plot is really simple, but even today I can watch and be totally into it, cheese included. Plus it's the only Disney movie where a guy gets Blendered to death. Honestly, how can you not love it for that?
