This week's analysis is a look into John Belushi, his style, and the lasting impact that he had on comedy. It's rare you find someone with as much talent is as many diverse fields as Belushi, comedian, actor, and musician. This video looks to explore the man's style, and I hope you have as much fun watching it as I did making it!
Thanks for watching!

It's tough to replace anyone in that movie, especially seeing as it worked out so well already, but I would have loved to have seen his take on any of the characters!

@@JacksMovieReviews i saw a documentary where Dan aykroyd said John Belushi was suppose to be i. Ghost busters! Sadly he got the call Belushi had died ironically as he wrote a line for John in the script for the movie.

To this day there has never been a performed better than him. His ability on the stage is one thing, but to have a top album, top movie and top tv show all at the same time is something no one before or since has ever done.

I saw the Blues Brothers and Animal House, and both are probably my favorite comedies. I truly believe that both films were great and funny because of John Belushi.

I appreciate how he had a way of just *being* funny without seeming like he's trying too hard. That's the thing that always sort of turned me off with the earlier Bill Murray comedies is that Bill just seems like he was trying too hard to seem funnier and smarter -- like, to the degree that other characters in the fiction of the movie notice what he's doing and are a little put off by him. Though that actually works well in Groundhog's Day because the entire point is that he's a repulsive wisecrack. I know that may sound harsh and I do like Bill Murray's more serious work; John Belushi just always came across as more of a genuine, effortless kind of comedy.
@JacksMovieReviews

Definitely agree on his just casually coming off as hilarious, although I do think Bill Murray can do that too, he has a look like "I don't even want to be here" which seems to work for all of his characters!
@RatatRatR
@RatatRatR 5 жыл бұрын
My take on that is that, though I find Bill Murray inherently likable, almost everything he's ever done that's supposed to be funny just reeks of trying too hard. By contrast, I've never seen what anybody liked about Belushi one way or another.

Great tribute! I'm glad you focused on his subtler moments. Too many people think he "just screamed" as the Samurai. You should have given more credit to Aykroyd though with Blues Brothers (and not just an easy swipe at BB2000 ;) ). Jake and Elwood's chemistry together is why that film works so well. Same with their Neighbors characters. They had the makings of a classic comedy duo, it's a crime that was cut short.

Thanks for this great video! Where I am located I had no chance to catch his SNL material (seen much of it here on YT; his Joe Cocker impression alone is pure gold: the man could really sing and he is 100% spot on). Always loved his brand of humor, best described (as mentioned in other comments) as effortless. The original Blues Brothers (1980) is awesome on many levels - it wouldn't have worked without him - and he was the best thing in "1941" (1979), which I actually liked save for a few gags that really fall flat, but the ultra lush production values, screaming "early Spielberg!" make it pure eye candy (pun not intended). Great selection of clips, perfectly showing why he was so incredibly funny: he was anarchic and always removed from reality. If there was any kind of obstacle: he just walked right through it with ease as if it didn't even exist. His deadpan delivery and perfect comic timing were unique. No need going into personal details, which can be looked up easily. Great video as always! Thank you!

Trevor White I honestly found it disappointing. I watched it about 2012 when I was in college and don't think it really aged super well. For a comedy, it seems very slow by today's standards and what was raunchy shock laughs in the 70s is kind of blasé now.

Animal House definitely has '70s pacing, hehe. But today's standards have gotten ridiclous, it's like every 5 seconds we have to cut to the next frame. And personally I was still shocked by the "I'm 13" bit, lol.

Belushi is great at physical comedy and improvisation. I read that he was in LA shopping a new film but facing rejection when he died. He was trying to top Animal House, which was a phenomenon. I mean how was he ever going to top Animal House? Danny Ackroyd was writing Ghostbusters for them. Isn’t that how life works? It’s so sad.

I've read Wired, seen all his stuff & have always loved his anarchy. Took a dip after I saw the 1st season of SNL though as I think that was the most over rated, highly adhered to in joke not funny comedy. It's all subjective though. Chase was the man on SNL & I can understand why he jumped ship to become a movie star, although apparenntly he said he regretted it. Aykroyd was amazingly overlooked as a great writer up until Spies like Us, then I thought wasnt hungry anymore. Thats where the true greats really come into play like a band, longevity - lucky musicians can have a great `1st album & then not hold up to the hype (the strokes) Belushi died from fear of not being able to surpass his previous efforts I feel. Bill Murray was a lot smarter.

Slimer (the green ghost that was originally called Onionhead) was based on Belushi, Aykroyd pretty much said so in an interview with Johnny Carson. A ghost version of Belushi as Jake Blues appears in a Ghostbusters comic installment, the character isn't referred to as 'Jake' but he's essentially sort of a ghostly version of that character - he's called 'Ray's Spirit Guide' and he does refer to Ray Stanz as his 'brother'. Belushi also was one of the first to give the singer Meat Loaf a gig, Meat Loaf himself was Belushi's understudy.

Beluci was funny because he was the sloppy slacker that did things without consequence. Funny guy. Don't get me wrong. But he was what some guys wanted to get away with. Having an simple unflinching ego and getting away with anything.

Belushi had a much quieter style than Black actually. A lot of his humor in Animal House comes from his facial reactions.
